Small Things

in Freewriters5 years ago

A cardinal visits
My Christmas tree;

Although it’s spring
He seems intrigued

Possibly
By a scattering of seed.

Squirrels, chipmunks
And rabbits drop by

In snow or rain
Or sunny skies,

They all enjoy
The garden’s peace

And in that way
They’re much like me.

Not everyone
Is chill and calm,

Not the circling hawk
Or visiting owl,

But the regulars
Have settled down

And even my dog
Accepts them now…

(Except for the squirrels
Who merit a growl.)

I wish we all
Could learn from these

Declare a truce
And live in peace;

But I do my part
And put out feed.

It seems small things
Depend on me.
