Australia, one of the top favourites of the T20 World Cup 2026, has been unexpectedly knocked out of the tournament after a humiliating loss to Zimbabwe national cricket team, and Sri Lanka’s comprehensive win over them proved to be the final nail in the coffin. Australia, which has a long history of competing in world-class tournaments with utmost strength and resilience, seemed to lack that edge this time. Perhaps it was because of poor selection and mismanagement, as some of their key players were injured right before the tournament.

I have always been a fan of Australian cricket because of the way they perform in major tournaments—it is usually remarkable. But this time, fate had something different in store for them, and they did not play the kind of cricket they are known for. From a selection point of view, dropping Steven Smith from the T20 World Cup squad was always a blunder and was bound to affect their progress. Considering his performances in the latter part of the Big Bash League, where he played some tremendous knocks, there was a strong and solid reason to include him in the team. Not only his batting, but his experience would have come in handy.

The bowling looked a little below par, and the batting altogether was not what the Australian team has been known for over the years. For me, with Australia out of the tournament, the World Cup has somehow become a little less exciting, despite India being there with the highest run rate. The presence of big, strong teams always adds to the thrill of such tournaments.

All the other strong teams have now made it to the Super Eights, and the fate of Pakistan will be decided today as they face Namibia. They will need to outplay Namibia to secure a place in the Super Eights, from where a new journey will begin for every team, as the competition has now become even tougher. I would have liked to see Australia in the Super Eights.

That said, it is a great achievement for Zimbabwe to reach the Super Eights. It will not only boost their confidence but also inspire other cricketing nations to compete better, invest in their players, and improve professionalism and energy in upcoming tournaments. In the long run, that is truly good for the cricketing world.

Thank you for going through my post. Have a great time ahead.
