Assalamu Alaikum! I hope you are all well. Alhamdulillah I am also very well and healthy. Today I will share with you the experience of one of the largest fish markets in Dhaka, "Bangladesh Matsya Arat". It is mainly located in the North Jatrabari area and is a very popular place for wholesale and retail sale of fish. It is not just a market, but a huge gathering of fish. Stay with me to know more detailed information about this fish market.
📍Location of the fish market.

This fish market is located just below the North Jatrabari Flyover. Fish is traded throughout this vast area, surrounded by large buildings and between the flyover. At the entrance to the fish market, a large signboard reads "Bangladesh Fish Market" in front of a building on the side of the road, which makes this fish market easily recognizable. Since this fish market is the entrance to the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, fish trucks come here from all over the country. To come to this fish market, you can easily come by bus, CNG, and motorcycle from any part of Dhaka Division.
- 📍Address: North Jatrabari, Dhaka-1204.

The main activity of this fish market or arata usually starts at 3 am. This fish market is busy from early morning till noon. Here, fish are displayed in large drums, plastic crates and ice baskets. The activity of this fish market or arata creates a lively atmosphere between buyers and sellers in a vast area under the flyover. The pictures above show that not only the common people but also retailers from different parts of the city come to this market to buy fish at wholesale prices. The scene of vendors shouting and buyers bargaining keeps the market alive.
🐟 Fish diversity and availability
If you visit this fish market or shop, you will be amazed by the huge collection of fish. The photos I took are proof of this.

The display of baskets full of Hilsa fish in this fish market was eye-catching. However, everything from fresh river Hilsa fish to cold storage fish is available here. In this fish market, the price is determined according to the size of the Hilsa.

The price of fish in our northern Jatrabari fish market depends mainly on the size of the fish and the quantity imported. Below is an approximate list of fish prices:
| Fish name | Size/Weight | Approximate price (per kg) | Steam price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hilsa fish (river) | 1 Kg + | 1400-1600 taka | 180-206 Steem |
| Hilsa fish (medium) | 500-700 gram | 900 - 1100 taka | 116-141 Steem |
| Lobster fish | Big size | 800 - 1200 taka | 103-154 Steem |

| Tilapia fish | Small size | 150 - 180 taka | 19-23 Steem |

| Shoal fish | Desi (large) | 600 - 800 taka | 77-103 Steem |
| Ayer fish | Large size | 700 - 900 taka | 80-116 Steem |
📋Special Note: If you buy fish at wholesale prices at this fish market or shop, the price is slightly lower, but in that case, you usually have to buy fish in batches (5 kg). And if you buy fish retail, the price may be 20-50 taka higher per kg.
🔪 Fish cutting system and cleanliness.

In this fish market, several skilled fish cutters sit under the flyover bridge. You have also seen in my picture how quickly they clean big fish and shrimps, I was amazed by the scene of them cutting the fish, because it was really nice to see them cutting the fish so quickly. In my opinion, those who want to buy fish and avoid the hassle of cutting the fish at home, can have these skilled fish cutters cut and clean the fish from here for a fixed fee.
💰 Market prices and shopping.

Since this fish market is a warehouse, the price of fish here is slightly lower than in the retail market. However, when buying fish in this fish market, you must have the ability to recognize good fish and you may need to bargain a little. Since you can buy fish directly from the warehouse in this market, there is less chance of cheating.
My personal experience
Positive aspects of fish market: There is a huge variety of fish here and fresh fish is guaranteed. However, there is an opportunity to buy fish especially at wholesale prices.
Negative aspects of fish market: This fish market is overcrowded and the market area is a bit wet and muddy. So it is better to wear suitable shoes when going to this fish market.
This North Jatrabari Fish Market or Bangladesh Fish Market plays a big role in fulfilling the meat needs of millions of people living in Dhaka. If you are a fish lover and want to see a variety of fish together, then I think everyone should visit this North Jatrabari Fish Market or Market once.
