Ramadan evenings always have their own special atmosphere, especially when it comes to preparing food for iftar. Yesterday afternoon, I stopped by one of the most famous culinary spots in North Aceh, Sate Apaleh in Geurugok.
This place is very well known among locals and travelers. During Eid holidays, the area can even get extremely crowded and sometimes causes traffic congestion because so many people come here to enjoy the satay. The aroma of grilled meat from the charcoal grills can be smelled from quite a distance, making it almost impossible to pass by without stopping.

Located along the busy roadside of Geurugok, the atmosphere here is always lively. The open dining area, simple orange chairs, and the smoky aroma from the satay grills create a warm and authentic street-food experience. As soon as you arrive, you can see the cooks skillfully grilling rows of satay over hot charcoal. The smell alone is enough to make anyone hungry.

What makes this place special is its crowd during Eid season. Many travelers passing through Aceh Utara make this place a must-stop destination. Sometimes the number of visitors is so large that it even causes traffic congestion along the road. Cars and motorcycles line up, people chat happily, and the place turns into a vibrant gathering point for locals and visitors alike.

The satay itself is simple but incredibly satisfying. Freshly grilled meat served with rich peanut sauce, warm rice or lontong, and a glass of tea or coffee from the nearby warung creates the perfect combination. The taste feels even better because of the lively environment around you.
From the kitchen area, you can see the cooks skillfully grilling rows of satay over hot charcoal. The smoke rising into the air and the sound of sizzling meat create a very tempting atmosphere. It is one of those simple but authentic street food experiences that you can only find in places like this.
However, this time I didn’t stay to dine in. I decided to buy some satay for take away and bring it home for iftar. Even in the late afternoon, the place was already busy. Some people were sitting and eating at the tables, while others like me were waiting in line to take their orders home.
After waiting for a few minutes, my order was finally ready. The satay was packed neatly along with the peanut sauce and rice. The warm aroma coming from the package made the journey home even more exciting because I knew it would be a perfect dish to break the fast.

For many people in North Aceh, Sate Apaleh Geurugok is more than just food. It is part of a local culinary tradition that brings people together, especially during special moments like Ramadan and Eid.
And for me, bringing this delicious satay home for iftar made the evening even more special

Sometimes the best iftar meal is not about luxury food, but about simple dishes that carry the taste of tradition and the warmth of local culture.
