In 2023, we visited Krueng Sawang River in Reseh Tunong. It was a simple trip, just to rest, laugh, and enjoy nature. The water was clear, the stones were strong, and the river flowed calmly. We swam, sat on the rocks, and felt grateful for the beauty around us.

That day, the river felt friendly. It gave us peace and joy. Nature welcomed us without asking anything in return. We never thought that this calm place would one day change so drastically.

Here are the story...

On the way to the river

Our journey from Lhokseumawe took about one hour. The road from Lhokseumawe to Krueng Mane was smooth and comfortable, following the main Medan–Banda Aceh highway. However, the trip became more tiring after that, as the road from Krueng Mane to Sawang was not fully paved. Even so, the long journey felt worth it as we got closer to nature.

When we arrived, we were warmly welcomed with a sack full of durians. It was durian season at that time. We enjoyed fresh durians and sweet rambutans by the riverbank of Reseh Tunong, sharing laughter and simple happiness together.

After enjoying the fruits, we performed Dhuhr prayer on the large rocks beside the river.

Surrounded by flowing water and green trees, the prayer felt calm and meaningful. Only after that did we finally step into the river and feel the cold, refreshing mountain water of Krueng Sawang, washing away our tiredness and leaving only peace.

Krueng Sawang River is still a very natural and untouched place. There is no entrance fee, no ticket booth, and no official facilities. Everything here feels raw and original, just as nature intended. Visitors do not need to pay anything to enjoy the river.

There are a few small kiosks near the area, but they are not located right by the riverbank. Most people simply bring their own food and drinks from home. You can sit on the rocks, eat together, and enjoy the sound of flowing water without disturbance.

This place is perfect for those who love simplicity. No crowds, no loud attractions, just clear water, strong stones, fresh air, and peaceful surroundings. Krueng Sawang is not a modern tourist destination, but that is exactly its beauty. It offers a quiet space to rest, reflect, and truly connect with nature.

What a beautiful moment it was. After swimming and enjoying the cold river water, we continued our journey to a friend’s durian garden nearby. Surrounded by nature, laughter, and simple conversations, the day felt complete.

Before heading home, we brought some durians as souvenirs, carrying not just fruit, but memories of a peaceful day by the river. Moments like this remind us how precious simple happiness truly is.

Flood disaster in Aceh
Now, the story of Krueng Sawang River is very different.

After the flash flood on November 26, 2025, the river that once felt calm and friendly turned into a place of deep sadness. The clear water became dark and violent. Many of the strong stones were moved or broken, trees were swept away, and the riverbanks collapsed. The sound of flowing water that once brought peace was replaced by destruction and loss.
The flood did not only damage the river, but also changed lives. Several areas around Reseh Tunong were badly affected, and there were reports of entire villages disappearing, taken by the force of the water. Homes, gardens, and memories were lost in just a short moment. What was once a place of rest and joy became a reminder of how powerful nature can be.
