หอยเชอรี่สามารถแบ่งหอยเชอรี่ได้ 2 พวก คือ พวกที่มีเปลือกสีเหลืองปนน้ำตาล เนื้อและหนวดสีเหลือง และพวกมีเปลือกสีเขียวเข้มปนดำ และมีสีดำจาง ๆ พาดตามความยาว เนื้อและหนวดสีน้ำตาลอ่อน หอยเชอรี่เจริญเติบโตและขยายพันธุ์ได้อย่างรวดเร็ว ลูกหอยอายุเพียง 2–3 เดือน จะจับคู่ผสมพันธุ์ได้ตลอดเวลา หลังจากผสมพันธุ์ได้ 1–2 วัน ตัวเมียจะวางไข่ในเวลากลางคืน โดยคลานไปวางไข่ตามที่แห้งเหนือน้ำ เช่น ตามกิ่งไม้ ต้นหญ้าริมน้ำ โคนต้นไม้ริมน้ำ ข้าง ๆ คันนา และตามต้นข้าวในนา ไข่มีสีชมพูเกาะติดกันเป็นกลุ่มยาว 2–3 นิ้ว แต่ละกลุ่มประกอบด้วยไข่เป็นฟองเล็ก ๆ เรียงตัวเป็นระเบียบสวยงาม ประมาณ 388–3,000 ฟอง ไข่จะฟักออกเป็นตัวหอยภายใน 7–12 วัน หลังวางไข่
เดิมหอยเชอรี่เป็นหอยน้ำจืดที่อาศัยอยู่ในแหล่งน้ำทวีปอเมริกาใต้ ในประเทศไทยนำเข้ามาครั้งแรกจากประเทศญี่ปุ่นและไต้หวัน ในฐานะของหอยที่กำจัดตะไคร่น้ำและเศษอาหารในตู้ปลา ซึ่งนิยมเลี้ยงกันอย่างแพร่หลายราวก่อน พ.ศ. 2530 ต่อมาได้มีผู้คิดจะเลี้ยงเพาะขยายพันธุ์เป็นสัตว์เศรษฐกิจเพื่อการบริโภค แต่ทว่าไม่ได้รับความนิยมจึงปล่อยลงแหล่งน้ำธรรมชาติ จนกลายเป็นปัญหาชนิดพันธุ์ต่างถิ่นในปัจจุบัน
