A flame that burns from within
those faced with opposition.
It comes with a sword to pierce the heart,
with rage that scares your calm into the closet,
closing the gap between docile and angry.

It’s a matter that puts your mind to the test
and maybe causes confusion —
a slap to your mood as your brain turns scarlet.
An explosion bursting out of the shadows
as you tear up your Gazette.
An urge to break something,
but common sense reins in your ire.

It’s the look on your face:
tired of broken-down trailers causing traffic commotion.
To spice it up, a vehicle knocks your expensive sidelight
and your head resets.
Maybe you’re still calm,
but the one at fault blames you
while others say “don’t be angry.”
Of course I don’t get angry —
I get furious enough to cause an explosion,
and I will blow.

Like volcanoes, I build up,
ready for nuclear combustion.
I swell, and if I can’t calm down,
an eruption comes.
Angry I get,
but a cool breeze can snuff out the flames
before they become wildfire.
