RE: POLL: Do you use AI (to translate)?
Thanks for this discussion, @wakeupkitty. I've been following the comments and wanted to add my own experience.
When it comes to translation, I just use whatever AI comes to mind, but personally I lean on DeepSeek and Gemini most. Those two have been through thick and thin with me🤫
I've noticed that frequent use of one particular AI makes it quite familiar with your writing, which can be helpful. But there are always things it won't quite understand—uncommon words, regional terms, or phrases that sound abusive in one language but are completely casual in another part of the world. That's where it gets tricky.
For me, it's actually best to type in English rather than my native language. Yoruba has so many variations depending on region, and AI fails to grasp the true meaning. Some words or phrases end up sounding like commands even when they're just normal conversation. Not to mention that there's a widely known Yoruba that's different from the native one, and AI only ever gets the widely known version.
And it goes both ways too. Someone replied to my post once—just a normal reply—but when I asked my AI to explain it, my own head derived a quite annoying meaning from it. Even though it was an English reply! I had already responded before I understood what was actually meant. I was so grateful the receiver didn't take it to heart 😩
So it's not just about translating from your language into English. Even when everything is already in English, meaning can get lost or twisted between what was written, what AI interprets, and what your brain decides it says.
I believe that even when we speak the same language – and this is our mother tongue – misunderstandings can still arise, simply because not everyone attaches the same meaning to the same word. When different languages are spoken and these have to be translated back and forth into one’s own language, the confusion naturally becomes even greater. So it would indeed be good if everyone bore this in mind. Even if the language is correct, it is wise to bear in mind that there are many differences in terms of interpretation and emotional connotations, and that this, in turn, can lead to many misunderstandings.
You’ve actually put quite well into words what’s happening. This poll actually came about after a discussion arose following something that was allegedly said. Nowhere in the comment could I find a single wrong word. The person who was angry and made accusations refused to point out that bit of text. A pity, but so be it.
As for languages: I believe that most languages do have a considerable number of words with multiple meanings.

even in the same language, we don't all hear the same thing. That's probably why misunderstandings spiral so easily, especially online where tone doesn't carry.
And the situation that sparked your poll sounds exhausting. If the person couldn't even point to the words, then it was never about the words. You can't argue with a feeling someone decided you caused.
Good reminder to ask first, assume later. I'm learning that the hard way too.
People do not only lack to ask first or do their own investigations simply out of laziness, but are not willing to reply if an answer is given. The own ego counts more plus dominating others.

I have to add that no AI ever learned how I write.
I remember I tried out a tool for writers. Those people stated that if I uploaded my story (of Dragon) it could write a follow up in my style. I did the entire story instead of just the minimum of lines required) I can tell you that story was typical AI generated common shit.
Not even the prompts I gave were used. I wrote the developers and next they said they were still working at it.
I am faster if I write myself and if needed use a translater.
That’s because they can never actually read us perfectly, since they’re not just relying on your data to write the whole story. They just relate things and give you what they think you’ll most likely accept, which might not be the case. Sometimes the writing and narrating style might look too good, but the ending isn’t how you would have ended it.
I experience so many changes in my writing tone when I correct my writing with Meta AI, Gemini, or even Google. I always have to tell them three times to stop changing my words and some phrases I intentionally made. DeepSeek is still better to some extent in that regard, but I still wouldn’t give it 100 percent, ’cause I’m unique. If a robot were to get me 100 percent, then I’d be lost as to what makes me more human, and I guess you could say the same about yourself. I really don’t like the idea of looking for a robot that understands me better✌️

Not once did this AI tool – which is specifically designed for writers – manage to replicate my writing style accurately. If that’s the idea behind this tool, then it needs to work as intended and not come up with something completely different. Even the gender of my main characters wasn’t right; the names were changed, and so on. I simply cannot accept that, especially not from a tool specifically designed for writers. If I want the story to end a certain way, I’ll specify that; that’s one of the prompts or instructions.
I also notice with translations that very little of it makes sense – at least as far as I can tell, given that I speak the language, of course – because when I translate it into Spanish or Indonesian, I’ve absolutely no idea what it says. I do notice, though, that when it comes to longer sentences, the translator loses the thread.
