It feels a bit strange to me to hear an adult say: I became an orphan. To is this is a word you use for children.
It's nature to make room for the next generation.
I hope she passed away in a peaceful environment.

Orphan means one who has no parents. So upon their death, people felt like they were without parents. That's why they said that. People felt their love for them was like that of their parents, and their departure created a void like that of a parent.
