Control
Many will say that they do not like being controlled or relinquishing control over their own actions. Humans do not like being ruled but being a lone wolf is not seen as a good idea either. You have to adapt to the group and the society you live in. That group of people is big and the bigger the group the more being with others starts to irritate. Aggression, hate, and envy lurk, not to mention the feeling of being threatened in one's territory.
Like animals, humans also need a place of their own. Sharing a home with others can be oppressive especially when not everyone has the same lifestyle or ideas.
Even within a household, there are rules to be followed to keep the peace. So when it comes to control, there is almost always 1 person who decides and the rest have to agree and follow the rules to keep it nice and cozy.
Is it fun when someone else is in control and decides how you should behave? Those who always have to compromise may have problems with this when the bomb goes off.
Of course, some people find it blissful that others decide everything for them. They don't want to be responsible. Not for their actions, their own lives let alone for others.
Relinquishing control is easy for some and an impossible task for others. The control freak will never understand how someone can just let everything run its course. The control freak cannot see the adventure in that.
No matter how much we claim to care about our freedom and claim to want to be in control of our own lives, we humans are all controlled, directed in a certain direction, and ruled. In the realities of daily life, it is only too easy for others to arrange everything. Things we don't have to think about like compulsory education, bus timetable, shop opening hours, national holidays, internet connection, mail delivered to your home, and the idea that you can't live without three meals a day and a smartphone. Those in debt are registered just like those with criminal records, the disabled/sick who need help. What doesn't know doesn't hurt only applies to those who live outside the system.
Of course, Big Brother watches us and blames others for his own actions. On average, when it comes down to it, we don't care. Humanity watches soaps en masse, other people's misery, and series like Big Brother (house) are still doing well.
By now we are used to cameras on the streets, being spied on, and anonymous hotlines. They are shockingly widely used and thus all the virtuous, snitching, and envious people help maintain control over their fellow man after all, nothing is worse than someone who can organize their own life, take responsibility and feel they have it better than you.
