Expedition

I’m far from lazy, but an expedition? Right now, I just want to do absolutely nothing. I reckon I generally do far too much. That’s why I’ve decided to take a break for a while and just get bored. That boredom is proving rather disappointing, because the day still flies by.

Boredom? Hanging around?
You know the type: those young people who can’t be bothered with anything, or those stay-at-home mums who just lie on the sofa or stand outside school moaning about how they’re going to get through the day. Or men who get bored and fall asleep on the sofa, usually whilst ‘watching’ a film. That film they want to see (and I don’t) and which, of course, they put on because they have the remote control.

Ah, those good old days of boredom. Boredom is definitely a luxury problem. Only those who are bored have time to go on an expedition, or you’d have to be a toddler. Like a toddler from the days of Jip and Janneke who still had some freedom and time to roam the neighbourhood, because compulsory education didn’t start until the age of seven and nobody complained when little children explored the neighbourhood on their own. It’s certainly true that what you learn when you’re young stays with you when you’re old and makes life a lot easier.

Though it’s no fun to look back on a life of drudgery and ask yourself why you did it all, because in the end it’s of no use to you whatsoever. Once in the grave, everyone is equal, and it turns out that wearing yourself out, working for your descendants or the boss, didn’t make you happy.

It is not work that sets a person free, nor is it possessions. Even art struggles to do so if something is always gnawing away at you and there is never a moment of true peace of mind.

In my opinion, if I don't work, I can't pay the bills, I can't feed myself, I can't buy clothes, etc. Money gives you independence. You earn money by working, at least that's how I do it. If you don't have money, you can't even buy a soda. Thinking that someone will help you is fine, but it takes away your independence.
Everyone who is alive is going to die. What we have to do is understand and accept that this is the way it is. A will remedies this. I don't want to imagine the state keeping what I have I'd rather leave it to the people I choose. I don't want to be a millionaire. I just want to be independent, to owe nothing to anyone.

It will be hard to not own anyone anything or worse be the property of the state. I understand what you mean and find it admirable you want to be independent and do it your way. A good reason to be proud on yourself.

Thank you so much, I knew you would understand what I wrote

When would I have time to get bored? As if I could even find the time for that!
