BRIEF HISTORY OF SIWES

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a training program designed to prepare students for higher institution for the industrial work situation they are likely to meet after graduation. Before the establishment of the scheme, there was a growing concern about industrialist, that graduate of institution of higher learning lacked adequate practical skills, preparatory for employment in industries.

Therefore, the employers of labor deemed it fit for improvement of this sector and it led to the initiation and designing of the scheme by the fund during its formative years 1973/74 introduce to familiarize the students with the skills of handling employer’s equipment’s and machine.

The ITF solely funded the scheme during its formative years after which it withdraws from the scheme in 1978 due to the financial problems, the federal government handover the scheme in 1979 to both the National University Commission (NUC) and the National Board of Technical Education (NBTE). Later in November 1984 the federal Government changed the management and implementation of the scheme to ITF and it was effectively taken over by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in July 1985 with the funding being solely borne by the federal government.

AIM/OBJECTIVE OF SIWES

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was initiated to update practical knowledge of students in the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology.
It IS aimed at bridging the gap between the theoretical knowledge acquired in classes and technical knowledge in the industry by providing students with the opportunities to apply their educational knowledge in real work situations.

It contributes to improving the quality of technical skills generally available in the pool from which employers source technical manpower Its gives student the opportunity to blend the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and with practical hands on application of knowledge required to perform work in the industry.

It prepares students for employment and makes the transition from school to the industry easier after graduation.
To provide an avenue for students of tertiary institutions to acquire industrial skills and experience in their course of study.
( To expose students to work methods and techniques in handling machineries that may not be available in their institutions.
