I know what you mean by ignoring, looking the other way, not responding but it's wise to think who/what to ignore when.
It is selfish since it's a way to survive, done out of fear (for example: ignoring child or female abuse).
If someone tries to destroy you it's better not to ignore and keep an eye on the person filled with envy. People like these can 'follow' you for 20 years or longer even if you keep moving and emigrate. They can wait and be like a stick you throw and end in your face.
You're right, too, you have to look at it from just such a side. You never know what kind of person you will run into.
