• What is anorexia?

Anorexia is known as an eating disorder that is characterized by eating too much food to gain weight. So many people believe that when they overeat they will gain weight which makes them eat less so as not to gain weight. This simply means that anorexia is an eating disorder that is characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight which makes one restrict the intake of food so as not to over gain weight.

The key features of anorexia are; restrictive eating, fear of gaining weight, distorted body image, psychological symptoms, and physical symptoms. The causes of anorexia can be a result of stressful life events, high levels of control, societal pressures to be thin, and as well genetic predisposition.


• Causes of anorexia?

The causes of anorexia are not just one it is complex and typically result from a combination of environmental factor, psychological, and biological factors few of which have been talked about here.

Sociocultural and Environmental Causes

  • Family dynamics: A critical or overly controlling family environment can cause the development of anorexia.

  • Peer influence: Negative comments about appearance, weight gain, and comparison with peers can intensify the concern for body image.

  • Athletic or Occupational Pressure: Professions like sports, and modelling can cause anorexia.

Psychological Causes

  • Low Self-esteem: Feeling of self-worth, and inadequacy can cause anorexia

  • Trauma: Having experienced bullying, abuse, and so on, can cause anorexia.

  • Perfectionism: Having a strong desire for unrealistic and controlled expectations can cause anorexia.


• Treatment of anorexia?

Treatment of anorexia involves one dressing his or her physical health, underlying psychological issues, and emotional well-being which the best of all of them is visiting a medical doctor.

  • Medical Treatment: We will need to visit a medical doctor for proper treatment and take our medication very seriously

  • Psychological therapy: We will need to focus on challenging and identifying disorders' thoughts about weight, body image, and food.

  • Counselling: We will need to help individuals develop a healthy relationship with food so they can focus on balancing meals.
