My Encounter with the IV Drip Stand in the Ward.

During my clinical postings as a student midwife, I have come across many instruments in the hospital ward. One instrument that quietly plays a vital role in patient care is the intravenous (IV) stand, commonly called the IV drip stand. The instrument at first may look like just a metal pole with wheels, but in reality, it is a silent lifesaver that supports many treatments given to patients.

The IV stand is a tall, upright instrument designed to hold intravenous fluids and medications during administration. From the bottom, the instrument has a strong-legged base fitted with wheels, which makes it very stable and easy to move around the ward without stress. These wheels allow nurses and other healthcare professionals to push the stand alongside a patient when they need to move or change position.

Extending upward from the base is a long stainless steel pole that is adjustable, meaning its height can be increased or decreased depending on the situation or the position of the patient. There is a small knob or clamp on the pole that allows healthcare workers to adjust it easily to any height they want it to be. The adjustable height ensures that the fluid bag stays above the patient’s body level so that it can help the fluid flow smoothly through the IV line.

At the very top of the IV stand are the curved hooks (there may be one, two, or more hooks depending on the type of the stand). The function of these hooks is to hang IV fluid bags, blood bags, or medication infusions. Once the fluid bag is hung, the IV tubing is connected to the patient’s vein through a cannula, allowing the fluid or medication to enter directly into the bloodstream through the vein.

From my experience during ward rounds and clinical practice, I have seen how often this instrument is used. Many patients who are dehydrated, weak, or recovering from illness depend on intravenous fluids to regain strength. Watching the IV stand holding the fluid bag while the treatment flows into the patient reminds me that even simple instruments play powerful roles in saving lives.

The IV stand can be used on several occasions, such as fluid replacement therapy, administration of medications, blood transfusions, nutritional support, and even emergency treatments. In maternity units, IV stands are frequently used during labor, delivery, and postpartum (after delivery) care to administer fluids, antibiotics, or other medications needed to support the mother. The greatest benefit of this instrument is mobility. Because it has wheels, patients receiving IV therapy can still move short distances without disconnecting their treatment or can walk around the ward with the support of the wheels. It also provides stability of the fluid, which ensures that the fluid bags remain secure and properly positioned throughout the treatment process.

To me, I feel the IV stand represents more than just hospital equipment. It reminds me that healthcare is built on using simple, unique tools to care for patients, and every time I see it standing beside a patient’s bed, quietly doing its job, I am reminded why I chose the path of nursing: to support life, healing, and hope.
