Cholesterol
Hello steemians. Thanks for checking out my post and I am appreciating @khursheedanwar for creating this opportunity to share ideas on cholesterol.
What is Cholesterol Level and what are its types?
First, let us try to understand the term Cholesterol. Cholesterol is a type of fat found in the bloodstream which plays a vital role in various bodily functions which includes the building and maintainance of cell membranes, production of hormones and absorption of vitamins A, D, E, and K.
Therefore, cholesterol level can simply be referred to the amount of cholesterol present in the blood; and they are of two main types. This includes:
Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL): LDL is responsible for moving cholesterol from the liver to the cells, accumulating in the walls of arteries, which would lead to plaque buildup and increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
It is also referred to as the bad cholesterol.High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL): HDL on the other hand is responsible for moving excess cholesterol from the cells to the liver for excretion, helping to remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream. With its positive effect in the body it is also nicknamed the good cholesterol.
Investigations to Measure Cholesterol Level:
There are various ways measure the level of cholesterol in the blood and one prominent way is through the blood test after getting a sample from the finger or vein. Thereafter the total measurement of LDL, HDL and triglyceride is taken, this makes up the lipid profile.
Another way to evaluate cholesterol level is through questionnaires with a doctor who takes into consideration the family history of the patient, as well as lifestyle habits (eating and drinking habit)
Why is HDL a good cholesterol?
As mentioned above, the high density lipoprotein plays the role of getting rid of cholesterol which might have become excessive in the body. It maintains the walls of the blood vessels and reduce the risk of inflammation. With this, there is low chance of having any cardiovascular condition or disease. It is more beneficial to the health!
