It could be that some other people remember but don't want to participate in the celebrations because they don't see anyone else doing so. The main speaker also remembers and also doesn't do anything. Maybe others also wanted to but wanted to see others participating first. What do you think?

That square is filled with people. Usually, memorable day everyone gathers and there is a ceremony held by the state/mayor. It doesn't look that way.
