What is the national bird of your country?
Nigeria's national bird is the Black-crowned Crane, also known as Balearica pavonina.
Black-crowned cranes are birds with large wings which help them to fly very well. They fly with the neck extended forward and legs stretched horizontally behind the tail. They also have long legs and light grey eyes. They are mostly black and they have striking, straw-coloured bristle-like feathers on the top of their heads. These birds are omnivores and will eat anything like snails, insects, crabs, lizards, amphibians, snakes, plants, grains, seeds, etc.
Share one interesting fact about your country's national bird.
One interesting fact about the Black-crown Crane is the unique and amazing dances performed by the adult birds when mating. This dance is not only connected with mating behaviour but is considered to be an expression of joy.
Have you ever seen your country's national bird in real life? If so, where?
Yes, I have once seen my country's national bird ( The Black-crowned Crane) in real life, at the zoo during one of our school excursions. The bird is truly adorable.
Why do you think this particular bird was chosen as the national bird of your country?
There are quite some reasons why the black-crowned crane is chosen as Nigeria's national bird. These reasons are:
- The bird is native to the wetlands and savannahs of our country (Nigeria).
- The bird is a symbol of peace and harmony. And these characteristics or symbols match the motto of the country: Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress".
- The beauty associated with the bird, especially the golden crown on top of the head.
