Capturing expression through pencil art
Hello amazing Steemit family! 👋
It’s always a pleasure to share my creative journey with you all, and welcome back to my creative space!. Today I’m excited to walk you through the process behind this graphite portrait. Drawing, for me, is more than just putting pencil to paper—it’s about observing, understanding, and translating emotion into something visible. In this post, I’ll be sharing not just the finished result, but also a clear breakdown of my process so anyone can follow along and learn from it.
Drawing tools
• A4 paper
• graphite pencils: HB, 2B, and 4B
• charcoal pencil
• black pen
• sharpener
• eraser
Step 1
I began, as I always do. The eyes came first. I spent time studying their shape and depth, carefully sketching the eyelids and placing subtle highlights to give them life. There was a certain calm intensity in the gaze that I wanted to preserve, so I avoided over-darkening it too early.
Step 2
After doing that, next I then drew his beard and began to gradually shade his face.
Step 3
Next I focused on the hair. Instead of drawing strand by strand, I approached it in sections. I followed the natural direction of the hair using controlled strokes, gradually building layers of tone. Darker areas were deepened to create contrast, while lighter spaces were left untouched to suggest shine.
Step 4
Once I was done with that, I then moved to drawing and shading the shoulder and neck. Using a 4B and 2B pencil, I gradually shaded it.
Step 5
In the final stage, I stepped back and evaluated the drawing as a whole. I darkened key areas to improve contrast and erased unnecessary lines to clean up the piece. This stage is always about patience—making small adjustments that elevate the overall work.
My selfie with my drawing
This portrait reminded me that drawing is not just about skill but observation and feeling. Mistakes are part of the process, and every line you draw is a step forward in your growth as an artist. The goal is not just to recreate a face, but to develop your own confidence and style. Thank you for taking the time to walk through my process. Your support means everything as I continue to grow and share my art journey.
