Drawing tutorial - expression of pain
Hello creative friends,
Hope all is well and you are all doing okay. Today I present to you another drawing from my sketchbook, and I hope you all like it. Drawing has always been more than just lines and shading for me—it’s a way to speak when words fall short. Every portrait I create carries a piece of emotion, and this particular piece, which I’ve titled “Expression of Pain,” is one that truly tested both my skill and my ability to connect deeply with human feeling. Here I will be sharing my step-by-step process of how I achieved this expressive pencil drawing below.
DRAWING MATERIALS
• A4 paper
• mechanical pencil
• charcoal pencil
• HB, 4B, and 6B pencils
• eraser
• sharpener
Step 1
First I started with the eyes, as they are the heart of every portrait. Using my charcoal pencil, I shaded around the eyes to express the feeling of pain.
Step 2
After doing that, I then went ahead and added the lips and shaded the face to add clarity to the portrait.
Step 3
Here I focused on working on the hair and shaded under the chin using my 6B pencil.
Step 4
This was where the drawing was coming to an end as I carefully shaded the neck and added the shoulder as well to make the drawing complete.
Step 5
Finally, I picked up the drawing and started to refine it. I added more details where necessary and also contrast to it. And below is my final result.
My selfie with my drawing
This drawing reminded me that art is not just about accuracy—it’s about honesty. Capturing pain isn’t easy, but when you allow yourself to feel what you’re drawing, your work becomes more powerful and relatable. Thank you for taking your time to go through my process. I truly appreciate the support from this amazing community.
