Contest- My National Emblems(fruit) | Mango

To begin with, a national fruit is a fruit that has been set aside by a country as a symbol of their identity. A national fruit is a kind of national emblem because it serves as an object of representation to a particular country.

What is the national fruit of your country?

I'm from Nigeria and the national fruit of my country is mango. It's botanical name is Mangifera indica. It was first cultivated in India, about 5000 years ago. It is a very good source of carotenoids (vitamin A) and ascorbic acid(vitamin C).

According to my research, mango is called "king of fruits". This is because Nigeria is not the only country that has it as national emblem. India, Pakistan and Philippines also have mango as their national fruit. Additionally, mango is the national tree of Bangladesh. So I'm proud of calling mango my national fruit.

Describe the taste and texture of your country's national fruit.

Ripe mango has a very sweet taste and a juicy flavour. Ripe mangoes are very fleshy fruits. Unripe mangoes are the direct opposite. Unripe mangoes taste sour and have hard texture.

How is the national fruit typically eaten or used in your country? Is it a seasonal fruit or is it available throughout the year?

Here in Nigeria, mango is either eaten or drank. To eat it, the exocarp is peeled off, exposing the yellow flesh. With the aid of a knife, it is divided into cubes. Bite after bite, it is consumed. To be drank, mango flesh is blended to a smooth consistency and sieved out. It is then served with white sugar and icecubes.

Mango is a seasonal fruit in my country. It's season spans from February to May during which every mango lover is expected to fill his or her desires because as soon as the season runs out, they'll have to wait for one more year.

I love eating mango. I love it. It has a great taste, it is nutritious and tingles my taste buds so much. I wait every year for its season to arrive so I can eat enough of it. I can finish ten mangoes all alone. That's how much I love it.
