From Dust to Duty Post: Constructing the Guard House
Captured and Designed with Galaxy-A15
Foundation DPM and Floor Slab.
The pickaxe encountered the water-softened ground, pushing through the resistance of rocks and gravel. "Wooosh!" The sound of muscles driving shovels. It would have been worse without the recent rains. The men are not digging for gold; the aim is to find a more stable layer, one that would hold our structure; a hard, stable stratum.
Knee-deep into the ground, we found stable earth, and workers were preparing a C15 concrete mixture to be used as blinding. "Four inches thick and 18 inches wide" the site engineer instructed and it was executed speedily.
Pegs set to 4" and string lines were put in place, to ensure a good top level for the blinding. Sand, cement and aggregate were mixed together, then activated with water into a slurry and hulled into the excavated trench. It was poured and taped, allowed to spread 18 inches at a depth of 4 inches.
The casting was allowed to set overnight, and the next day was foundation footing, lifting the structure from the ground, 3 courses to the DPC level.
Bang! bang!! Bang!! Nails rammed into boards, the carpenter is building formwork on the structure. It's six inches deep and spans 1.5 meters square. Volume = Area x Depth. ∼0.343 cubic meters of C25 concrete. It must be firm enough to hold it, plumbed and levelled.
The inside was filled with hardcore, "ram it well" he insisted, "they should not move when you walk on them". It was layered with gravel then sand and covered with a 1000 gauge polythene as DPM to keep moisture away.
Bags of cement, Wheelbarrows of sand and gravel in a ratio of 1:2:4 got mixed thoroughly and activated with water. The formwork held its end as expected, the surface was tapped and levelled, and the concrete was left to cure.
Conclusion
From “Wooosh!” in soft earth to the final tap on wet concrete, the foundation story is done. We went from looking for hard stratum, to blinding it in and built up 3 courses and tried to keep it with a layer of DPM on rammed hardcore like a shield, we don’t just have concrete - we have confidence. The house will now sit on ground that won’t move, and walls that won’t sweat.
Next stop: superstructure.
