Level Up: Mastering the Spirit Level
What is a spirit level?
A spirit level is a measuring instrument typically made up of a liquid-filled-vile inbaded in a straight profile that helps detect horizontal levels and vertical plumb using the position of the bubble in the vile.
Working Principle
Air bubbles will always rise to the highest point in a liquid and the same happens in a liquid-filled-vile that provides the reading on a spirit level. When placed on a level surface, gravity will pull the bubble to the centre of the vile, but if the surface is not level, the bubble will move to the higher point.
A single spirit level will typically have 3 viles, one for horizontal level, a second vial for vertical plumb and a third for reading 45° angles.
The levelling device above with hooks on both ends hangs on a rope and detects when the line is horizontally levelled. It's an excellent tool when transferring levels and points using a line. Just make sure the line is well-tensioned because a sagging rope can affect the reading.
A spirit level with double lines like this can be used to establish a slope for draining water.
As shown in the animated image above, you will have to keep adjusting your levelling device till it levels at the centre.
This specific vile detects a 45° angle. Not every spirit level has this function.
Care for a spirit level
To avoid misalignment, make sure the spirit level is not dropped. Falling down can affect the accuracy of the spirit level.
The aluminium frame should not bend. Avoid exposing the spirit level to any physical stress.
Run a simple calibration test regularly to make sure the spirit level is in good shape.
Don't keep the spirit level under the hot sun, as it could affect the liquid in the viles.
Clean the spirit level thoroughly after use, especially when used to level concrete.
Running a calibration test
You need to run a calibration test before buying a new spirit level and the test needs to be repeated often before use.
To run this test
- Place the spirit level on a surface and make some markings.
- Note the bubble's position. Its position is very important for this test.
- Flip the spirit level 180° on the same surface, with the help of the markings.
- Check if the bubble is in the same spot now that the spirit levelhas been flipped.
If it is in the same spot:
The spirit level has passed the calibration test.
If it is not:
Your spirit level might need some adjustment or a replacement.
You may use a known flat surface to test your spirit level.
Here is a picture showing two craftsmen, artisans, using spirit levels both long and short to erect and install designed pillars on a wall. They can't trust their "naked eyes" here, the spirit level tells them when the pillars are straight and plumb.
Conclusion
A spirit level may look simple, but it could be the only thing standing as difference between a professionally looking work and the actions of an amateur craftsman.
