Introduction

As information technology is aiding mankind in the fast actualization of its daily tasks, it has, at the same time, become a means of cutting corners, especially in educational research and other article-related project works. Due to the advancement in information technology, individuals have reluctant to conduct research studies and report them by themselves in their own words. Rather, they copy other related research works and claim the authorship. This is an unethical practice.

The word plagiarism, as defined by Prof. Madya, and Dr. Nor Azni Abdullah, Dr. Ahmad Mazli Muhammad, and Dr. Krishnakumari A/P N.R. Krishnan, in their article, entitled "Avoiding Plagiarism: A guide for students," is "the broad use of the other others works without acknowledgment and appropriate permission and claim fake authorship for submission and manipulate data." source

The University of Manchester Metropolitan defined plagiarism as "the action such as submitting material whether is written, oral or visual which is originally produced by other people without proper acknowledgment and so the work might be considered as owned by the students." source

Therefore, plagiarism can simply be viewed as the utilization or complete use of all the data or information created by other individuals without recognizing or referencing the other original authors. A typical example of plagiarism is a process whereby an individual presents an article that is typically a group work as his or her work.

Types of Plagiarism

  1. Self Plagiarism: This is the type of plagiarism in which an individual reuses his or her work previously written work and submits it as a new work. This includes using all or part of an article of a particular community on steemit for another community.
  2. Direct Plagiarism: This involves the process of duplicating an entire piece of information written by another person and claiming ownership of the work. Direct plagiarism is also referred to as clone plagiarism or word-for-word plagiarism.
  3. Hired Plagiarism: It is the act of hiring a person or group of persons to write an article for you. It also involves acquiring articles from vendors on the internet or research agencies.
  4. Collaboration Plagiarism: This form of plagiarism is mostly common with group works. A group could work together on a piece of work and a member of the group could present it as work done by himself.

Other types of plagiarism include Mosaic Plagiarism, Borrowed Plagiarism, Outline Plagiarism, Contributing Author Plagiarism, Aggregated Plagiarism, Bibliography Plagiarism, Accidental Plagiarism, and Secondary Source Plagiarism.

Factors that Bring about Plagiarism

  1. Poor Cognitive Domain Activities of Individuals: This could bring about plagiarism when an individual cannot organize their writing, paraphrase the meaning of sentences, have difficulties in writing in the English language, and so on.
  2. Opposition to Change Mentalities and Practices among Individuals: Generally, the individual copy, and it is difficult to change from it since they cannot foster their works on their own. This variable is major and becomes a solid 'impetus' to impede the changing of working society among individuals.
  3. Lack of Awareness of Plagiarism among Individuals: Oftenly, individuals plagiarize without knowing they have plagiarized. They likewise don't even have an idea on how to appropriately refer to or give credit to the creators they utilized their viewpoints. The individuals who truly fulfill the time constraints don't take cautious notes where they get the data from.
  4. Constant Innovations in the World of Information Technology: This factor is straightforwardly identified with the data-seeking attitudes of individuals to accomplishing their tasks. They like to simply google everything and take out the necessary data and make it as their own.

Possible Solutions to Plagiarism

In a bid to curb the alarming state of plagiarism,

  1. The tasks given to individuals should be connected with the critical thinking of the individual.
  2. Individuals should figure out how to appropriately and precisely cite and refer to and give credits to the proprietor of the thoughts or assessment. They should utilize legitimate references in their reference or in-text reference.
  3. More sophisticated technologies should be built to detect plagiarism.
