PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is seen as an act of converting another person's idea, thought, language etc to ones ownership.
The above definition implies that any work,idea, thought, language that is been used by someone without reference to the original owner is termed plagiarism.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

The list of plagiarism is unending so in the course of this writing, emphasis will be laid on the prominent ones which are;

complete plagiarism

source-based plagiarism

direct plagiarism

self or auto plagiarism

paraphrasing plagiarism

complete plagiarism:
complete plagiarism is the word to word copying of someone's entire written work without reference.

source-based plagiarism: source here means research sites where information are gotten. If a researcher uses two source and references only one, it is called source-based plagiarism.

direct plagiarism:
direct plagiarism talks on copying someone's work word to word without citation or attribution.
This type of plagiarism is often confused with complete plagiarism.
The difference is direct plagiarism talks of a section of the work whereas complete plagiarism talks of the entire work.

self or auto plagiarism:this type of plagiarism is centered on authors or writers who copy their own past or previous work without referencing it.

paraphrasing plagiarism: paraphrasing means rewriting something with minor changes made.
This type of plagiarism is very common. It happens during examinations, project writing etc.
Any work that is copied with minor changes made to it is called paraphrasing plagiarism.

FACTORS THAT COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is gaining ground in today's world because of the following factors

ICTs and web:
this is one major plagiarism influencing factor in the world.
ICTs stands for information and communication technologies. It's a term that coins all communication technologies ( internet, cell phone, computers etc), with the availability of ICT, people now find it much easier to copy and paste.
regulation:
regulations are rules set aside to help maintain order.
Since there are no set down rules and punishment for plagiarism, people abuse it frequently.
academic works: in every institution, there are work loads on every student. In order to reduce the load, student's go into plagiarism.
Other factors include teaching factors, pressure, pride etc

CONCLUSION ON HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM

Based on my above explanation on plagiarism, it is well understood that plagiarism is an act of theft. Therefore it should be avoided.
The following are ways to avoid plagiarism;

always site your source: when using someone's idea, thought, language always remember to add citation.
always include quotations: using quotations mark with citations shows that a statement isn't yours.
presenting your own idea: instead of over citation and use of quotation marks, it's advicable to use one's idea.
