Many science units will require you to write a formal laboratory report. The purpose or aim is to report on what you did, what you learned from an experiment and why the findings matter.source
Now what is report writing;

"A report is a formal document that elaborates on a topic using facts, charts, and graphs to support its arguments and findings".source

STEPS OF REPORT WRITING

STEPSMEANING

Materials and MethodsDecribes materials and procedures used which include flow chart, graph, diagram of the experiment setup. It should discuss about what and how the materials were used.source
PrinciplesThis is the most important part of the report. This is where a researcher states his/her views of everything known theoritically or texts books consulted, lectures notes. This paragraph is often informative and it takes up to 4-10 pages.
Result and analysis/ Observation/ ProceduresThis section is where you present the data obtained in your experiment in a logical order. Presents finding or results of the experiment graphically or using tables. Also discuss how result were analysed, including error analysis. Discuss what was observed in the course of experiment. Experimental procedure using clear paragraph, explain all steps in order of what happened.
DiscussionThe aim of this section is to make an explanation for your result and to interpret those result.

Referenceit is standard academic practice to provide the details of references used in your report. References are required both in text and in a list at the end of your report.
