Hello Steemians,

Today is the day of Achievement 3!

Today I will tell you what is plagiarism and the importance of citing sources. So let's start.

What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is someone else's use of their work as if it were theirs by stealing their content. Stolen content can include images, videos, words, ideas, sounds, and anything else. The main issue here is not to cite the source.

What Are the Most Common Types of Plagiarism?

While there are many types of plagiarism, let me show you the most common ones.

  • Global Plagiarism:
Global plagiarism is when you steal someone's work and post it as your own. It is one of the most common types of plagiarism. Remember that making money from someone else's work without giving source is a serious crime.

  • Auto-Plagiarism:
Automatic plagiarism is when some of an author's previous paragraphs are used in a new post without reference to them.

  • Self-Plagiarism:
Reposting an old work, a previously upvoted post, as if it were new. Yes, it is plagiarism if you post it again and again, even if the content is entirely your own.

  • Verbatim Plagiarism - Copy & Paste:
Such plagiarism has increased, especially with the spread of the Internet. With the development of information technologies, all kinds of information accessed on the internet can cause plagiarism by copy-paste method.

  • Mosaic - Patchwork Plagiarism:
In this type of plagiarism, it is called collecting information and sentences collected from different sources in a single work. This is a more cunning act that requires effort.

  • Incorrect Citation:
If you use citations in your post without citing the source, you may be plagiarizing. The way to avoid this mistake is to cite the source.

  • Paraphrasing Plagiarism:
Paraphrasing Plagiarism, it is when you use someone else's text in your own post by changing the sentences. This type of plagiarism is one of the most common types of plagiarism. However, even if you have changed the sentences, it will be in your best interest to cite the source.

How to Avoid Plagiarism When Creating a Post?

  • Read a lot. Put your ideas in the post in your own words. However, if you are going to use someone else's sentence to make it more impressive, make sure to cite the source. You can do as in the examples below.

''Hayatta en hakiki mürşit ilimdir(The supreme guide in life is science).''
MUSTAFA KEMAL ATATÜRK

The necessity to acknowledge others’ work or ideas applies not only to text, but also to other media, such as computer code, illustrations, graphs etc. Source

  • Use your own photos, videos. Even if you do not have a photo that you can use in your post, be sure to indicate the source of the website of the person you are using the photo from. You can do as in the examples below.
