Rangoli - a cultural and spiritual floor art
It is considered auspicious to draw rangoli in Hindu religion during spiritual and religious ceremonies.
The two aims of drawing rangoli are revelation of beauty and the acquisition of auspiciousness. The forms drawn in the rangoli are symbolic.
Rangoli is generally drawn on mud floor, cow dung smeared floor, tiled floor, etc. When performing the act of moving lit lamps about the face for someone too, rangoli is drawn around the wooden seat on which he is seated and also in front of him.
Rangoli is of two main types: Form dominant- cones and circles are drawn proportionately, and Ornamental- here importance is given to flowers, leaves, trees, creepers, animals and birds.
