First time I saw this plant on an empty area between the buildings very close to me. I had no idea something like that exists and grows around. I though that I found really cool rare plant (since I didn't see it before) and it is probably carnivore one (because of the shape).
I took some photos for reference and started to look for it online. It turned out that is it not rare and not a carnivore. A bit disappointing must say, but still it is one of the coolest wild flowers blooming out there. After a while when I went back to the same spot to look for it, it was all gone and building squad was digging the place preparing it for another block of flats.

Last month I found it in a park near me growing happily in the shade of Olive and Pine trees.

This small plant is quite common here in Portugal, parts of Spain, south of France Algeria, Baleares, and Morocco . And now that I know how it looks like I see the leaves popping in many places. The flowers show only in the cooler months. It will start to bloom in late October up until early April when the temperatures start to raise again. Then the flower and leaves will fade and the whole plant will go dormant for the summer (It reminds me the cycle of Cyclamens).


To survive the plant stores water and energy deep in the ground on small bulb/tubers and will start grow back when the temperatures drop. The leaves have quite long stems that will reach out though the sandy soil to the surface. I dug up on and took it home to plant in a pot. It grows and blooms every year when when I mess around with the pot and change soil. Seems that when it goes dormant it doesn't care what is happening around. In the fall it will wake up like nothing happened and grow again. I heard people do grow it in containers and shadier places in the garden. It is a cool pant so I am not really surprised. I adore my little one too.

As you can see the flowers are not very big, but they have the coolest shape and colours. The hoodie is dark aubergine colour with some little nipples on. Looks quite wild and dangerous. The neck (I am sure those parts have their proper names) has more white and just some darker stripes and spot. And of course as they were mocking everyone around, they constantly stick their tongue out!
The whole flower will grow directly from the ground on a short stem. They are not taller than 10 cm in total. And that is when they really stand tall!
