The Smederevo Fortress is one of the largest medieval lowland fortresses in Europe and the last major work of Serbian architecture from this period.

The Smederevo Fortress consists of the Big and Small towns. The small town is actually the remains of a former castle where the despot's family and nobility lived. The big city was erected a little later and was populated by the population during the Turkish conquests.

There are many legends and legends about the construction of this fort, which you can still hear today from locals and local guides. One of them says that the despot Djurdj Brankovic had a dream in which he was told that the new city must be on the river and that afterwards he ordered the erection of a fort at the mouth of the river Jezava into the great Danube.

During the construction of the town, stone was brought from Viminacium, from Kosmaj and from the Ram fort on the Danube.
Due to the high speed at which the fortress of Smederevo was built, many builders died from exhaustion working on the structure. Despot Jerina - the wife of Despot Djurdja - has been called the main culprit, and her name is still "cursed".

So it was probably the legend of the treasure that she buried somewhere in the fortress before the invaders penetrated the fortress, never to find it. And since nothing like this has ever been found in this area, if you crave adventure and fantasize about becoming Indiana Jones, the Smederevo Fortress will give you a chance to try and make it happen.

Excavations at the fort are still going on, so if you visit this place you will really have the impression that history is happening literally in front of you!

The excavation of the foundations of a still very mysterious church within a fortress that is not known for certain when it was first erected has found a tomb for now unknown nobles and jewelry of inestimable value. Vases, pottery and medieval weapons are no longer counted, all of which can be viewed at the nearby Smederevo Museum.

The fortress of Smederevo has a triangular shape and 25 high towers that make it recognizable today. She had long resisted the invaders. When it finally fell under Turkish rule in 1459, it was also the end of the medieval Serbian state.

The fortress of Smederevo was exceptionally preserved until the mid-20th century. Then, during World War II, there was a large explosion of ammunition that damaged the fortress and destroyed a huge part of Smederevo. In 1946 the fort was put under state protection and its conservation is still ongoing.
