"Real power is economic, so there is no point in talking about democracy." José Saramago

José Saramago is by far one of my favorite writers, although he is no longer physically present in this world, his forceful writings left indelible traces in world literature. If we stop to analyze some of his phrases, we could enter a very interesting plane of thought and share some knowledge and points of view.

Example, the sentence with which I start this publication... In this case I do not intend to bring any religious topic into the discussion, because if you tell me that the real power is that of God, well, I respect your point of view, but that is not what I want to emphasize in this meeting, but rather how in the course of time economic power has been strengthened above all, Am I wrong? Or is it an absurd perception on my part? If you are interested in what I have to say, continue reading and I will gladly give you my point of view, and perhaps we might not agree at the end, but I am sure that interesting proposals will emerge.

But, before we go any further: How can we define power?

In simple words it is that faculty or power to do something that a person or a group of these have. A fairly easy concept to understand, but let's go to that first part of the sentence:

Real power is economic

I particularly think that beyond the limits or certain phobias that society imposes, by nationality, skin color, sexual tendency, among many others, I know that they can be set aside if the person in question has a lot of money. I have been able to prove it, not because I have money, obviously (hopefully, but no, not for now), but because there are people who treat me differently from knowing that I am a doctor, independently of being a Venezuelan living in Colombia, and here saying that you are a doctor is synonymous with saying that you have money, that you earn millions of those Colombians every month

But, this is on a small scale, really when we talk about economic power on a national level - in any country - we are talking about those business elites, who are the ones who support the politicians when they are on the campaign trail, the ones who bring in large amounts of money for a certain president or governor to win the election. But after that, that they get their job done, and it's just to get someone specific to win, comes the way they will get that support. You know what I'm talking about, right?.

Here I enter the second part of the sentence, and make my approach below:

So there is no point in talking about democracy.

I don't know how the political and economic system is handled in Europe, Asia, but speaking specifically of Latin America, I do have to say, and it seems that all politicians are cut from the same cloth?

What are elections for? Yes, it's a question that seems absurd, but, let's see, are the laws that are made through these politicians really to support society in general or to pay political favors to the businessmen who supported the election of a specific candidate?

For example, where I live today the national company is not properly supported, but instead the regulatory framework for imports was facilitated, but, those in power are the ones who can invest hundreds of millions to import, and coincidentally, many of them are linked to people in the government. Of course, these are just hypotheses of mine that could be simple coincidences, but what we call democracy for me regs, and is only a shield to make us believe that we can choose in the future of something when really the future, at least in economic matters is already negotiated?

I'd like to know what you think about it, I'll be happy to read you and respond in the comments.

Have a great weekend, everyone.

More than political power which is a symbol of authority, great power is also attached to the financial capabilities of a person and that is just very common in every place.

Totally according to you my friend, the real power is held by the economic elites, who pull their strings so that certain policies benefit them or those that may harm their interests are put on the back burner. Economic power concentrated in the few is the problem of the many.
