Crops with 'cut and paste' genome arrive in the EU/Llegan a la UE los cultivos con genoma de 'corta y pega'

Just talking about genetic manipulation of plants and animals makes many people's hair stand on end, but the truth is that this is a practice that humans have been carrying out for thousands of years; the vegetables that are now consumed have no nothing to do with the same species that were collected thousands of years ago.

A muchas personas tan solo hablar de manipulación genética de plantas y animales se les ponen los pelos de punta, pero lo cierto es que esta es una práctica que el ser humano viene realizando desde hace miles de años, los vegetales que ahora se consumen no tienen nada que ver con las mismas especies que se recolectaban hace miles de años.

In the following photograph you can see what corn looked like before humans began to cultivate it and select it genetically, the same thing happens with some animals that have been hybridized, such as the donkey and the horse to obtain mules or, more recently, all crosses that they are made to "improve" dog breeds.

En la siguiente fotografía podéis ver el aspecto que tenía el maíz antes de que el ser humano empezase a cultivarlo y seleccionarlo genéticamente, lo mismo ocurre con algunos animales que han sido hibridados como el asno y el caballo para obtener mulas o mas recientemente todos cruces que se hacen para "mejorar" las razas perrunas.

The problem is that all these improvements are very slow and it takes many years to see the results, but now science can help us specifically with the well-known genetic tool CRISPR that allows us to alter genes using a system similar to cutting and pasting in text editors.

El problema es que todas estas mejoras son muy lentas y se necesitan muchos años para poder ver los resultados, pero ahora la ciencia puede echarnos una mano concretamente con la conocida herramienta genética CRISPR que permite alterar los genes utilizando un sistema parecido al corta/pega de los editores de texto.

Due on the one hand to population growth and on the other hand to the climate trend towards drier environments, we need to find new strategies to be able to feed everyone, which is why the European Union is about to give the green light to the use of new genetic editing tools for crop improvement.

Debido por un lado al crecimiento de la población y por otro a la tendencia climática hacía entornos más secos necesitamos encontrar nuevas estrategias para poder dar de comer a todo el mundo, por eso la Unión Europea está a punto de dar luz verde al empleo de la nuevas herramientas de edición genética para la mejora los cultivos.

This technology makes it possible to modify the genome of any biological organism in a precise and efficient way, a kind of cutting and pasting of the precise fragments of the DNA of the same organism so that it behaves differently according to interest in each case, for example making them more resistant to the cold or water scarcity.

Esta tecnología permiten modificar el genoma de cualquier organismo biológico de manera precisa y eficiente, una especie de corta y pega de los fragmentos precisos del ADN del mismo organismo para se comporte de forma diferente según interese en cada caso, por ejemplo hacerlos más resistentes al frío o a la escasez de agua.

All this logically, as it could not be less, with correct supervision to prevent that instead of us eating the modified potatoes, they eat us or use us as slaves. In any case, it is advisable to have alternatives prepared in case things go even further wrong, as there is still a lot of room.

Todo esto lógicamente, como no podía ser menos, con una correcta supervisión para evitar que en lugar de comer nosotros las patatas modificadas nos coman ellas a nosotros o nos utilicen como esclavos. De cualquier forma conviene tener alternativas preparadas por si las cosas se tuercen aún más, que todavía hay mucho margen.
