Ethereum Classic Blockchain Splits Due to Reorg by a Single Miner

in Project HOPE4 years ago

Was Ethereum Classic attacked?

As suggested by the Bitfly mining solution provider, a network reorganization of 3693 blocks occurred at block 10904146.

A diagnostic report was immediately released to explain the identification of the violating miners.

Originally considered a network attack, the event was later dismissed by the team behind ETC.

Another status report released later that day explained that the reorganization wasn't intended, and it happened because miners used old offline software for 12 hours.

So, was it a bug?

because everything points to it being a bug, glitch or something similar.

And until now it was an attack, nobody has been responsible.

Thanks for the info

Yep, you're right.. Maybe it's a failed attack.. Imho.. It's dangerous having a bug that can reorg the blockchain unintentionally..

Could be a 51% attack, but that is surprising for a coin which i thought should have many miners on the network. Well, I guess they fixed it, but that's a huge scare going further

So this single miner should be big.. Or the whole network is too small? .. But it's over 4 TH/s

It could be either way. But if the network was big enough even a huge miner won't be able to manipulate it.

Nice information by the way. I also see you're yet to join the projectHope community on discord, we have a very interactive discord channel and a lovely one at that where you can learn more about the project hope community and interact with other members.
