Promoting Peace Through The Application Of Technology
The world has seen so many advancements in this era; thanks to technology. In fact, what is now possible at this time could not have even been dreamt of some years back. This is why I believe that technology has remained one of the potent tools in this generation to determine the fate of humanity and humankind. The relevance of technology is without question and we have also seen how it has affected lives. Just like I normally say; technology is double-faced, just like a double-edged sword - the good and the bad. Here, we shall take a look at one of its good sides - how it can foster peace between people in the society and in the world at large.
There are many ways by which technology has promoted peace between people and the world at large, and we shall take a look at them. The first one is by bridging communication gap. You will agree with me that this era has seen increase in social media technologies and one very vital purpose of this is for communication. Social media technologies like the instant messaging apps, video conferencing apps, etc, have been very instrumental for communication in this era and have further created connections between persons of different backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, etc. Even though there may be downsides to the usage of these apps, but the truth is that they are useful even for nations to settle disputes using diplomatic and constructive conversations.
Another technological application that has led to increased peace is the technology of education. The more educated someone is, the easier it is for them to live in peace because they understand the catastrophic effects of unrest. It is worthy to note that among the factors to engineer peace, education is the top. This is because, by educating someone, you have eradicated them from ignorance, which some people prey on to cause chaos. It is difficult to manipulate an educated person into becoming chaotic over what can be resolved amicably. Technology has created an enabling environment for education to thrive more and be better.
If you consider what is obtainable in this era in terms of education and compare it to many decades ago, you will know that some mind-blowing advancements have been made. Before now, the major tool of education revolved around the traditional classroom settings. But now, even from your devices connected to Internet, you can receive tutorials and access an almost infinite resource materials. I remember during the lockdown period of the Covid-19, a lot of institutions resorted to using virtual classrooms and online lessons for their educational activities - thanks to technology. If you look at education of now and that of the not-so-distant past, you will know that a lot has improved.
In addition to education and communication, health care is another field that has experienced the impact of technology. I once read about advances in AI and its application in medicine - including robotic surgical proceedings, telemedicine, etc, and I was wowed at the so much innovation that has arrived in the world of medicine. Now you may be asking how it relates to peace. Well, one of the things that can lead to chaos is societal tension, which can also arise from inadequate access to health care or rather inequality of health care delivery among the populace. When the health sector is addressed, then a lot of things will fall naturally into place. Remember this old saying; "a healthier nation is a peaceful nation." More so, it is when the people are healthy that they can contribute meaningfully to the wellbeing of the society.
The last application of technology in relation to promoting peace that we will look at here is the provision of tools for conflict resolution and prevention. For example; if you enter an environment and you see that there are CCTV cameras mounted or surveillance drones flying, you will conduct yourself in an appropriate manner so that you will not be captured in the footage for unwholesome actions. Even if you had planned to do things that are not good, the presence of these technological devices will discourage you, thereby fostering peace.
As you have seen, even though no technology is perfect nor without negative effects, but on a fair note, it has provided some very undeniable helps to humankind.
