Frames of My World: Streets Around Me

I think that the roads around us are not just paths made of bricks and stones, but rather, they are living stories. Thousands of people walk these roads every day; each one carries different dreams, busyness, and emotions in their hearts. Ever since I saw the theme of this contest, I have been trying to look at my familiar daily road from a new perspective. However, I will take you to one of the busiest and most modern intersections in the capital, Dhaka—known to everyone as ECB Chattar. I will present to you, through photographs and writing, how this road is intertwined with our lives amid the daily hustle and bustle, the noise of people, and the constant rush of vehicles.

ECB Chattar (Dhaka Cantonment Area)

Where is this street or place located?

ECB Chattar is located right next to the Cantonment Police Station under the Dhaka North City Corporation. It stands as a huge roundabout at the beginning of the Kalshi Flyover. Although this area was once quite quiet, it has now become a major junction for people travelling to Mirpur-12, Matikata, Cantonment, and Uttara-Kuril. The square is eye-catching from afar due to its clean, wide roads and modern traffic control system.

What makes this street or area important in the daily life of local people?

In my opinion, ECB Chattar is now a lifeline or a heartbeat in the congested city of Dhaka. For those who want to go from Mirpur very quickly to Pragati Sarani, Airport Road, or Gulshan-Banani, this road is a blessing because there was once a huge canal here, and I never thought that such a change would happen. However, local employees, school and college students, and businessmen have to cross this square every day to reach their destination. Besides, it has become the economic driving force of the entire area due to the modern shopping malls, restaurants, and raw markets built on both sides of the road. I never thought that this road would become so busy. Also, because of this road, I have seen that the land prices in our area have increased considerably compared to before.

The Excavator Monument, a memorial to the Liberation War, stands in the center of the ECB Chattar

⊚ This monument in the middle of the square is not just a sculpture; it is a part of our heroic history. Thousands of people pass by this monument every day, which inspires a different kind of patriotism and humane motivation in everyone, even in the heart of a mechanical city.

Hawker Bhai's makeshift stall selling small items set up on the sidewalk

⊚ This stall caught my eye while walking along the sidewalk of ECB Square. This small business, filled with everyday necessities like scissors, combs, and brushes, tells the story of a man's honesty and a family's livelihood. Although there is no big showroom, their tireless work and simple struggle for life in the heart of the mechanical city remind us of a different kind of humanity.

ECB Chattar's Mina Bazar Supershop—a reliable address for busy people's daily shopping

⊚ This super shop covers a large part of the modern lifestyle of the ECB Chattar area. At the end of a busy day, people of all ages come here to buy favorite food and fresh vegetables for their parents or loved ones. This familiar scene of shoppers with trolleys and their sense of responsibility towards their families reminds us of a beautiful and caring human form of civic life.

The clean sidewalk surrounded by greenery on ECB Chattar & autorickshaws standing next to the line

⊚ The green trees along the roadside are quite soothing while walking along this wide and clean sidewalk. On one side, ordinary people walking, and on the other side, this image of autorickshaw drivers waiting for passengers in the scorching sun tells the story of a quiet yet lively reality of everyday life in the heart of a mechanical city.

A fragment of modern civic life running along the main road of the ECB Chattar

⊚ This wide highway and the multi-storey buildings next to it are symbols of our modern urbanization. But an even greater truth is the flow of life of people moving along it—some on motorcycles, some carrying goods in trucks. In the rotation of each wheel of this mechanical city, thousands of people's urge for livelihood and their own human stories of survival are mixed.

The famous Muslim Sweets at the corner of ECB Chattar

⊚ In my opinion, this sweet shop is not just a business, but a hub for locals to hang out and celebrate. This ever-familiar scene of buying sweets for the family or having a quick snack on the way home at the end of the day reflects a simple, humane aspect of our heartfelt Bengali culture.

1000011604.jpg

Long queue of vehicles stuck on the main road of ECB Chattar

⊚ This photo taken from a flyover is a familiar image of Dhaka's busyness. With modern high-rise buildings on one side of the road and hundreds of cars on the other, this long queue tells the story of not just traffic jams, but also the daily struggle of thousands of people rushing to their destinations. Hidden within this mechanicality is the indomitable human motivation of Dhaka residents to survive.

A well-known restaurant on the side of the ECB Chattar

⊚ In my opinion, these restaurants are not just places to eat but also a place to relax after a long day. People come here to spend quality time with family or friends. It tells a simple human story of our social interaction and life in the heart of the mechanical city.

A busy moment as CNG autorickshaws lined up at ECB Chattar rushing in search of their destination

⊚ These green CNG autorickshaws are not just mechanical vehicles, they are our daily hope of reaching our destinations. Even amidst the intense busyness, every turn of the wheel is intertwined with the tireless work of the drivers and the dreams of thousands of ordinary people. This bustling intersection is a simple human form of survival in the heart of Dhaka.

The man looks around and then crosses the road

⊚ The moment of the pedestrian observing the situation around him at this busy intersection of the ECB Square is quite beautiful. Keeping the square's monument nearby, his careful and responsible step reminds us of his awareness of life. This image of moving forward while ensuring his safety even in the heart of the busy mechanical city tells the story of a simple human reality of civic life.

What kinds of activities or people can usually be seen there?

The diversity of people on the ECB Chattar is worth seeing. The diversity of people on the ECB chattar and their busyness are truly worth seeing. Our road is now so busy that vehicles and people from any route can be seen here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Vegetable vendors and working people start coming and going in this area from the crack of dawn. However, the scene of the entire area changes completely at 8 am. Along with school, college, and university students, thousands of office-going people are rushing to their workplaces from here. I am also a regular passenger in this bustling stream of people who leave their homes every morning in search of livelihood. And the traffic police members are also seen having a very busy time keeping this huge stream of vehicles and people in order.

I saw that although the traffic jam was somewhat light in the afternoon due to the intensity of the sun, it became widespread again in the evening, which lasted until midnight. In the evening, the surroundings of the ECB chattar sparkled with lights. The numerous modern shopping malls on both sides of the road are bustling with shoppers, and the showrooms of famous brands are packed with shoppers. In addition, the restaurants and cafes here are bustling with foodies.

I think another attractive aspect of this square is the diverse street food stalls that have sprung up on its sidewalks and roadsides. Not only are their prices a bit lower than those of restaurants, but the food is also quite delicious. I often eat some of my favorite street food from here on my way back from work or the office.

How does this place reflect the culture or lifestyle of your area?

ECB Chattar is basically a modern transformation of the lifestyle of middle-class and upper-middle-class Dhakaites. The way an ordinary intersection has become a modern commercial center in a span of a decade is a testament to the rapidly growing culture of Dhaka. The lifestyle of the people here is very fast-paced because of the cantonment area next to it. From personal experience, on one hand, there is the competition of mechanical vehicles; on the other hand, there is the Bengali culture of special food, tea, and chatting about contemporary politics at small food stalls on the side of the road. This ECB Chattar is a great combination of modernity and tradition.

What story or feeling do you think this place expresses through your photographs?

These pictures I took are not just pictures of mechanical roads or vehicles; they mainly reveal the stories of people's struggle to survive and small acts of humanity on the busy highways of Dhaka. Behind these pictures is a personal experience of mine. That day, while withdrawing money from an ATM booth in the ECB Chattar, I gave a small tip of 20 taka to the security guard uncle on duty at the door. The wide and sincere smile that appeared on his face despite his extreme fatigue after receiving the money touched my heart. Even if I gave money to an ordinary beggar, I might not have felt as satisfied as I felt in the smile on the face of that hardworking man.

ATM booths and busy pedestrians on the sidewalk of the ECB Chattar

These frames of ECB Chattar basically express this feeling—how even in this mechanical city, a little compassion can bring a smile of unspeakable happiness and relief to people's faces amidst hard work and busyness.

Conclusion

In my opinion, roads are not just a means of transportation; they are a mirror of an area. This highway of the ECB Chattar writes the stories of thousands of people every day, takes some to their destination, and brings some to find a livelihood. These roads around us witness hundreds of experiences every day. Every day while passing through these roads, I discover a new face of Dhaka. I have tried to present everything beautifully, and this was my arrangement today.

Thank you for sharing your great idea about the dense population of Dhaka city, including the ECB premises and the beautiful surroundings. Also, there are many dense populations in Mirpur, along with a lot of traffic jams and people moving on the roads, which in the eyes of the people are almost on the verge of extinction. I wish you success here. Also, the number of nature in Dhaka city is very less, and the life of people has become much more difficult. Sometimes I think that Dhaka city is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Thank you.
