The first three months of a Kitten’s life
I wish I had taken shots of when this little fella was so young. I'll be sharing more posts about these animals. I'll give him a name today and share that with you.
But for today I'll talk about the early stages of the kitten's life, since I've seen so many I'm used to it. I'll show you th siblings, they're three in number and they have their big mother who has been living at the porch rent free.
There are many things about the kitten's life that is beautiful and sad at the same time. It starts with a kitten's first month. A kitten is born blind and deaf, completely vulnerable. It cannot see or hear you and it cannot help itself. It is entirely up to the mother to care for it. She does all the work, she feeds and keeps the kitten warm. She cleans the kittens. I wonder how good the instincts had to be to know all these naturally.
If the mother leaves, the kitten will die. This isn’t an exaggeration. Once they are three weeks old, they begin to figure out how to use their legs. They are really unsteady at that point, it's cute and funny to watch that. They fall, but they start to move around. It looks small but that move is everything.
There is significant transformation by the second month. They are crying almost as soon as they are born. They are standing and still relying on breast milk food but they can feed on some little fish pieces and meat.
If you have a litter box, they could use it at that point. They are starting a new journey by developing their cat personalities, jumping, chasing, fighting the other siblings, which is mostly for fun.
They are no longer blank slates. One kitten will be bold and brave and another will be hyper and can’t stop climbing and another could be so shy and afraid. I've seen so many different personalities to agree that even animals are different in behavior by design.
Month three is all of the kitten's real activity. This little fella who I'm thinking I'll call "FLASH" is almost 2 months old. It's already active in personality and also active in movement. It's a true bundle of energy, wanting to go everywhere and do everything. It is a little brave though.
At month three they clearly see everything around them as a toy and your household will be their playground. They are eating solid food and really developing their bodies. This may also be the most important time to spay and neuter if you're keep as pets. This will prevent many health and behavioral issues.
It is really surprising to think about all that can happen in this short time. For those ninety days, pay close attention to the animal. What you do or do not do will affect the animal for the rest of its life.
