Gender Equality in the Workplace |

I have worked at Shaheen School, Mohammadpur, Dhaka branch as a teacher , and at Millennium Associates, Gulshan. I will share my experience about what kind of situation we Bangladeshi women are facing in the workplace here and how people create attitude towards women in the workplace.
How can workplace culture impact gender equality?
Gender Equality at Workplace |
---|
The women of Bangladesh experience in the workplace culture has been mixed. Women are getting important roles in urban corporate offices but in a significant number of rural workplaces, they are still discriminated. In some offices, when women are in leadership positions, when those women are making a decision, their colleagues are surprised or dismiss that. In most places women cannot work night shift, for security concerns. This problem making it difficult for them to grow in their careers.
There are some positive changes happened. For example, nowadays many companies are providing a secure place to work for women and give maternity leave or child day care to the women. Women will be more confident at work if workplaces are based on equality. However, this change is occurring slowly, mainly because of traditional attitudes. This means that workplace culture is a huge part of achieving gender equality. If it improves, women will have a more clear cut path towards progress.
What role do laws and policies play in achieving gender equality at work?
Bangladesh has the strong laws and policies for women's right protection. In this regard, the 2006 Labour law ensures women fair wages, maternal benefits and a safe work environment. A mandatory step too was the 2009 High Court's direction for prevention of workplace sexual harassment. Under this rule every organization is supposed to have a committee to prevent sexual harassment but many do not follow such orders.
Women are easier to enter the job market due to the National Women Development Policy and the quota system in a government job. The women’s quota gave jobs to my many friends who became primary school teachers. In the past, this job had a women's quota of 60% . The problem is that these laws are usually written, but unenforced due to social attitudes, the carelessness of institutions and lack of awareness in women. Government and organizations and citizens need to work together to enforce them.
How can men contribute to promoting gender equality in the workplace?
Men's Contribution for Promoting G.E. |
---|
Men have very important role in Bangladesh's society. Gender equality can be worked towards in the workplace with their help. Positive environment will rise at work place if our male colleague treats women with respect, equality. There are times women in leadership positions are overlooked or their decisions are not treated seriously. For best women at work men will just have to consciously change this mindset.
In the family support from men is also very important. The only way women will be able to think so freely about their careers is if a man treats a wife’s career, sister’s career or even mother’s career at same way. Men can help at the domestic chores and talk up if they notice unfair behaviour during work.
Men need to play a role outside of the workspace in changing the way society views about women. The positive changes in society show respects women and helps create job opportunities for women. It will not only benefit women but it will eventually help build a better future for all of us.
