Pencil portrait of Dwayne Johnson
Greetings, everyone, and I welcome you all to my blog. Today, I am excited to share another pencil portrait that I recently completed. This artwork features Dwayne Johnson at his early age, long before he became one of the most recognised faces in entertainment. Portrait drawing is one of my favourite ways to improve my artistic skills because every face presents a new challenge. Some require careful attention to expressions, while others demand accurate proportions and smooth shading. This portrait gave me the opportunity to work on both, making it a rewarding experience from start to finish. Here's the process I took in creating this drawing.
Drawing Materials
• A4 paper
• mechanical pencil
• graphite pencil
• charcoal pencil
• black pen
• eraser
• blending tissue
• sharpener
Step-by-step process
Step 1
I started by lightly sketching the overall shape of the head. During this stage, I focused on getting the proportions correct instead of rushing into details.
Step 2
After completing the basic outline, I added details to the eyes. I gradually built the eyelashes, pupils, and eyelids while preserving tiny highlights to create a realistic appearance.
Step 3
After doing that, I gradually shaded the face. Using tissue paper and a blending stump, I softened the graphite to produce gentle gradients across the forehead and scalp while preserving the highlights that give the skin a realistic appearance.
Step 4
Next I focused on the neck. I spent time developing the neck muscles by gradually increasing the darker values beneath the jawline.
Step 5
To complete the drawing, I shaded the clothing with darker graphite. This simple adjustment helped the face become the main focal point of the artwork.
Step 6
For the finishing stage, I carefully examined the entire portrait and refined every important detail. I darkened selected shadows, lifted highlights with a kneaded eraser, cleaned rough edges, and adjusted small areas until I was satisfied with the overall result. Below is my final result.
