How Plastic Mulching helps farmers save money and increase crop yields
You can't just have a farm, grow the crops the old fashion straight forward way, not include any innovative practice and expect to have the highest yields from the crops.
That's why, besides harvesting videos, I also shared these helpful practices that'll save you some money and also some avoidable labour.
In today's video, I'll show you a farm and a method called the plastic mulching and I'll explain to you exactly what benefits you'll be getting if you put this into practice.
Your aim should always be to produce the same thing with less money and greater quality. That's when you know you're being very productive.
What happens is the farmer covers the elevated soil with very long sheets of plastic. The edges of the sheets are secured by the soil that is placed with a hoe.
The Plastic sheets have small irrigation pipes placed there and it runs through the entire length of the sheet. The pipes are there to deliver water directly to the crop roots.
It's a very necessary thing, the plastic sheet helps the soil to retain the water for long periods of time. One of the main goals is to block direct sun light. When weeds get water and sun light, they'll grow and spread like wildfire and you wouldn't want that in your farm.
If you prevent weeds from growing in the first place, you're basically saving the time, energy in labour and the money you'll pay the labourers who will be weeding on a weekly basis.
You'll also be protecting the crops you'll grow from dirt and any potential spread of diseases.
If you put this into practice, you not only save cost and protect your crops but, looking at the video, you can see that the farm is neat, aesthetically pleasing and you'll be more proud that you're the owner of such a nice environment.
Your crops will also be abundant. In this farmer, you can see just how abundant and fresh the tomatoes are.
For anyone on Steemit with an interest in farming, the best methods to ensure a bountiful crop is to invest in plastic sheets and irrigation systems.
