Here he is, Elias said. He took the key from his pocket, and the car stopped right away.
The song Country Roads by John Denver stopped playing at the middle of the chorus. Elias sat down, looking at the land around him. There was snow in the cornfields. Elias could see deer tracks to the east in the snow. Different birds making squeaks and flying around. Elias really hated winter before, but now he liked the winter days because they bring good memories from the past. He remembered nights full of cheap beers and chat with friends, walks in the snow. Life seemed much easier in those times.

Elias left the car and stepped into the field where he stood.

At home, Elias's mother Mary was worried about him since her son ate little to none of his roast beef at the table. Elias told his mother that he was fine and just had no appetite. Mary and Arthur were Elias's caring parents who went to all his matches and parent teacher meetings. They attended church on Sundays and watched football games on Mondays. Elias was not like his parents, but he knew how to act like them.
Before joining the army, before the war, Elias loved to read. In his childhood days, Mary read the Bible to Elias. Then he used to read his textbooks and many old myths and stories.

One time when Elias was smoking his first cigarette after three weeks without smoking, he heard his parents whispering something inside a room. They worried because Elias was so quiet lately. Elias was thinking of Caleb, his only friend. Elias and Caleb used to talk about guns, movies and reading books.

Elias headed to Chicago, the weather was harsh. After driving a little farther, Elias came across a nice and clean country house. Putting on his gloves, he prayed to God. He started remembering a man he did not know named Mr. Sterling. They met once at a bar. Elias was tired after returning from Iraq, where he served his country in the war. Sterling was a nice man who had a southern accent and said he was the brother in law of the same army unit as Elias years ago. He paid for Elias's beer and offered him a chance to make a fortune. Elias had no money to start anything, so he agreed to go with Sterling.

Elias rang the doorbell of the house but there was no answer. He knocked louder, and Julian Vance opened it. Julian looked really well dressed. He asked why Elias knocked on his door. Elias pointed his M17 gun, with a silencer on it. Then he shot Julian between the eyes, and the old man fell dead. Julian Vance's tie was full of blood.

In the evening Elias called Mr. Sterling from a special hidden phone.

Elias said that everything was done well. Sterling told him that the job was great and that he should leave everything behind and meet him at their set meeting place. Elias destroyed the phone and put the gun and his jacket somewhere far in the east.

There begun the life of a young confused boy turned into a man without driving the demons from his mind. There's no turning back from this.
