Friends, our daily lives entail adhering to certain rules, fulfilling specific responsibilities, and performing various tasks. However, this particular assignment of mine is an entirely new experience—one that is both novel and deeply engaging. Moreover, it is a commitment limited to a mere 15 days. It can be described as a specific duty undertaken as part of a broader set of responsibilities; since I am currently residing in a hostel, I am required to abide by certain regulations—rules that apply equally to everyone, though many often attempt to sidestep them. In any case, all operational duties here—ranging from managing meals and handling all the grocery shopping to overseeing newspaper subscriptions and managing the keys and locks—are entrusted to a group of four individuals for a 15-day rotation. In this manner, these four individuals collectively shoulder all the responsibilities for a 15-day cycle. The entire process is supervised and managed by members of the Mess Committee and the Audit Committee—individuals who, just like us, are students themselves.

Anyway, since I am now one of the four members responsible for the next 15 days, I am also fulfilling my duties regarding the mess management. Consequently, I have to handle a variety of tasks; one of these involves—counting the newspapers—a duty I will be performing single-handedly for this 15-day period. Of course, there are various other duties to attend to as well.

Paper counting involves the following routine: every morning, two or three different newspapers are delivered to our hostel. I am required to collect them by 8:30 AM; subsequently, I must count every page of each newspaper and write the corresponding page numbers—in both Bengali and English—on each individual sheet, according to the specific publication. Furthermore, on the front page of each newspaper, I must record the date, the day of the week, and the total number of pages. This counting and recording process must be carried out for every separate newspaper, and a record of these details must also be maintained in a personal notebook, as I am required to submit an account of this activity every fifteen days. Finally, by 9:00 AM, I must return and deposit the newspapers on a designated table so that everyone may access and read them throughout the day.

Subsequently, at 10:30 PM, I am required to check every page of each newspaper before putting them away. If any newspaper is found to be completely defective—or if any specific page is torn or contains errors—I am held accountable to the Audit Committee or the Mess Committee. In fact, such instances may even result in a monetary fine. Consequently, I am striving to perform this task with the utmost caution. I have now been engaged in this paper-counting duty for the past three days. I am hopeful that I will be able to discharge my responsibilities effectively throughout the entire 15-day period.
