Hello friends,
A visit to Harishchandra Ghat in Kashi, the ancient city of Varanasi, is not just a sightseeing trip—it’s a profound spiritual experience. Located on the sacred banks of the River Ganges, this ghat holds a special place in Hindu mythology and daily life.

According to legend, King Harishchandra once lived here, upholding truth and righteousness even in the face of immense suffering. The ghat is named in his honor and is believed to be one of the few places where funeral rites can be performed at any time of day—such is its sanctity.
As I approached the ghat at dawn, the air was thick with the scent of incense and the soft chants of priests. The river glowed under the rising sun, and boats gently rocked on the water. Unlike other ghats bustling with tourists and pilgrims, Harishchandra Ghat has a solemn, quiet energy—marked by the constant cycle of life and death.

Watching the rituals unfold was both humbling and moving. Families gathered to perform last rites, offering flowers, rice balls, and prayers as the pyres burned. The crackling of wood, the sound of Vedic mantras, and the sight of smoke rising into the sky created a powerful atmosphere of reverence.

Despite the heaviness of the occasion, there's a strange peace here. In Kashi, death is not feared—it’s seen as a doorway to liberation (moksha). Harishchandra Ghat embodies this belief, reminding visitors of life’s impermanence and the eternal journey of the soul.

I sat quietly on the steps, sipping chai from a clay cup, observing the gentle flow of the Ganges. A group of children played nearby, a sadhu meditated in silence, and a priest blessed a grieving family. Life, in all its complexity, unfolded in harmony.

Leaving the ghat, I carried with me a deep sense of reflection. Harishchandra Ghat is not just a place of final rites—it’s a powerful teacher, reminding us to live truthfully, as its namesake once did. In the heart of Varanasi, this sacred spot offers not just ashes, but wisdom.
