"Contest Alert !!! || "The internet speed in my country".
Hey there, friends! Today, I’m diving into the topic of "Internet Speed in My Country" as my entry for the exciting contest hosted by @abdullahw2. Let’s explore together!
How would you describe the average internet speed in your country? Is it equal to global standards or not?
The internet speed in Nigeria, in particular, has been described as being divided between two different worlds; the urban world, and the rural world. Generally, it remains fairly good in all major cities like Lagos, Abuja or Port Harcourt being satisfactory particularly due to the fiber-optic service offering done by Internet service providers such as MTN, Airtel among others. You can watch movies, participate in video conferences and download files without giving your hair out at least not always. But even in urban areas it can be unreliable the connection randomly drops after minutes and hours of surfing at speeds which are slower than the dialup.
Those in the countryside are not lucky like those in urban centres as the following points show. Internet is either inaccessible or very slow with even the simplest page loading appearing like a severely daunting task. Mobile operators remain dominant in Nigeria with affordable internet however, mobile internet is expensive, and data limits are often far below the level necessary to capture the modern digital context.
If we compare it will international norms, Nigeria is significantly below par. While South Korea offers lightning-fast internet connection and others are not so far behind, Nigeria is far from this pace with average internet connection. However, there’s hope. Projects like Starlink, and the deployment of more fiber optics networks are sometimes spearheaded to do so, but these are not still cheap enough for ordinary folk.
For now we have to settle for what we can scrape together, use multiple data plans, switch from provider to provider and dream of a better, more consistent tomorrow.
Do you know how to test the speed of internet? Share step by step the whole procedure.

Any method chosen in testing your is internet speed is easy. To start with the procedure you need to ensure that your devise is connected to the Internet either through Wi-Fi or a cable. Any other application or download should be closed because they interfere with the results. Next, go to your browser and visit a site that quite literally tests your connection speed, such as Speedtest.net or Fast.com. There you will click on a button that identifies either as “Go” or “Start.” Click it and wait as the tool scans how fast your connection is. Within a few seconds you will get the numbers in the section: Download speed, Upload speed and Ping.
If the speed you’re getting is way lower than what your Internet service provider promised, then there could be a problem. You can try this after some time during different times of the day probably there, can be congestion issue or you can call your provider to look into the matter. It is fast, simple, and allows understanding whether one is receiving the worth of the money spent.
How the slow internet speed can affect our personal and professional lives?
Living with slow Internet is both a nuisance me and a waste of time for the employee. But in day-to-day life, think about streaming a movie or a video call with family – the stream is constantly freezing. It downgrades a movie and also wastes time. In this regard, things are even worse on the professional level. You are participating in a critical web conference, and bam, the connection drops. In general availability there are lots of issues, the files often take ages to upload or download and the emails do not go through as they should.
That is a complete nightmare for students or anyone who works from home. Doing research, attending classes or working from home is highly inconvenienced by a slow internet connection. Business too are affected since people take too long to access their emails, attend to customers’ complaints, and even make orders online.
It influences your disposition as well how can one be sane over a simple as sending a message. Unfortunately, when everything relies on the internet in the modern world, slow connection doesn’t merely kill the time, it thwarts efficiency and potential.
In your opinion, what steps can be taken to improve internet speed and accessibility in your country?
In my opinion to increase internet speed in Nigeria, the fiber-optic networks must be extended to rural institutions. Urban areas are already served, but the most important question is how the others areas can be connected? It is also important that providers be made to compete and in doing so offer quality service delivery while at the same time cutting down on their costs. The government should keep subsidizing infrastructure projects and work with website companies like Starlink, which can connect sites that cables cannot. It also needs public awareness when it comes to utilizing and maximizing data use. With collective endeavors of government, private firms, and aspiring citizens, Nigeria will be well on its way to providing affordable high- speed internet connectivity to the population without leaving anyone behind.
