SEC-S17 /W2| "What if you were the president of your country?"

in Steem For Pakistan15 days ago

20 April 2024

Dear citizens of my beloved country,

Ronald Reagan once said, “Recession is when your neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours. And recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his.”

Wrong! Recovery can come if you allow me to be elected as South Africa’s newest president.

As we have entered the election period, I have listened to and read the manifestos of many of the political parties over the last couple of months. If you ask me, there is something good in all of them. Okay, some ideas are a bit far-fetched. What most of these parties miss is the fact that South Africa is so deep in trouble water that having 101 items on your “promise list” is not going to do it.

I’ve narrowed my list down to three core priorities. Unless we have these three things in place, we can forget about saving South Africa.

  1. Stop further economic decline.
  2. Address the energy problems and logistics.
  3. Stop the increase in corruption.

1. Economic decline

It was clear in the budget speech earlier this year that South Africa has reached a dead end as far as the economy. We were such a proud and strong economic country, but unfortunately, this is no longer the case. As a country, you cannot keep borrowing to get you out of situations. It is like obtaining a credit card so that you can pay the installment of your motorcar.

No! The budget is supposed to create a change that stimulates growth by lending capital to its residents to encourage them to engage in business and not borrow from the top countries in the world.

Our Minister of Finance, Mr. Enoch Godongwana, announced during the budget speech that the government is proposing tax increases of a total of R15 billion in 2024/25. That government currently receives R738.7 billion in tax revenue from personal income. Is this fair? Not if you cannot show me what was done with the previous year's taxes.

I do believe that if we focus on economic growth and create top soil for current concerns, we will address issues such as unemployment and close those potholes that South Africans are complaining about all the time.

2. Energy problems and logistics

“Loadshedding” is a word known to all South Africans. I am convinced that these days the first words a baby utters are no longer “mommy or daddy” but “loadshedding.” How can we expect foreign investment if we cannot guarantee that we will keep the “lights on?”

Ships are waiting on the waters of the wide ocean for more than 40 days to be offloaded at our biggest harbor. How can we ensure investors that it is “safe to trade” with South Africa?

Poor governance, bad policies, and “fixing” need to go! It is time to follow competition discipline between service providers and to do away with state-owned companies.

3. Corruption

At the end of last year, our very own president, Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa himself, said that when it comes to corruption, his own party, the ruling party, failed to introduce, after the end of apartheid, “an era of integrity, honesty, and ethical performance.”
Yes, I know that corruption is all over the world, but if our president acknowledges it, then you must know how bad it is.

Corruption is a vicious circle. It leads to fewer working opportunities, basic services that cannot be delivered, a poor economy, and a breakdown in trust.

Corruption is a crime that needs to be stopped!

This is, however, not where I want to leave it.

Education and healthcare are close to my heart, and it is not because I am female but because it is the right of our citizens, from the young to the old.

In our own Bill of Rights, Chapter 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, we have added inalienable human rights that read as follows:

(1) This Bill of Rights is a cornerstone of democracy in South Africa. It enshrines the rights of all people in our country and affirms the democratic values of human dignity, equality, and freedom.
(2) The state must respect, protect, promote, and fulfill the rights in the Bill of Rights.
(3) The rights in the Bill of Rights are subject to the limitations contained in or referred to in Section 36, or elsewhere in the Bill.

To ensure the democratic values of humans and citizens of South Africa as president, I will give my attention to the following:

Education

Again, there are three core problems that I, as president, would like myself and the people of this beautiful country to focus on.

  • South Africa’s education system is one of the weakest in the world and requires extraordinary intervention from all role players. I would like to see the government, politicians, the private sector, civil society, non-governmental organizations, teachers, and parents stand together.

  • Let’s listen to the teachers. Continued strikes in education are threatening the growth and survival of our country's economy.

  • It is time to declare education not a right but a necessity! The only way we are going to do that is to amend South Africa’s constitution.

Healthcare

Last but not least, I want to give attention to healthcare.

  • The weak service delivery at government facilities like clinics and hospitals is well known. It is also no secret that there is a lack of ambulance services, medicine, and experienced staff. This needs to be addressed urgently.

  • In recent years, specialized and trained medical staff have left the country. It is time that we keep them here and not look for greener grass. This we can do if the government works closely with the private health sector and medical funds.

  • We need to restore the dignity of the underprivileged urgently. It is their right to access the best medical healthcare. This we can only do if we encourage and reward those who do it.

If there is one thing that always knocks on our door, it is a challenge.

My road as president will be full of challenges.

The biggest challenge at the moment is winning your support so that you put your X next to my name. If I can accomplish that, I can overcome the current challenges we are facing as set out in my letter, as well as appoint the right people in the right positions, stop South Africa from leaving the country, and whatever comes knocking.

In South Africa, it is time to rewrite the history books. Let me be the first woman to lead this country. Not only will I be the first female state president of South Africa, but I will also be the first white female. The last white president we had was in 1996, nearly 30 years ago.

It is time to show the world that APARTHEID is truly no longer among the Rainbow Nation.

Sincerely
@patjewell

Corruption is the root of all evil and insincerity in African continent and the world at large. You see our leaders presenting well written manifestos but find it difficult to fulfill when they are being elected, it's really a pity.

Come to your manifesto as the South African President, you have a beautiful manifesto here. At least you've not promised us heaven on earth like my Nigerian leaders who won't remember a thing when sworn in. You have stated that you're going to tackle the basic areas that needs urgent attention.

I salute your courage and decision to improve on the educational sector of your country because education is a light to every community/nation.

You have also listed improving healthcare. This is great! Health they say is wealth, you value the health of your nationals so that they won't be traveling abroad for medical treatment or die due to poor health facilities.

I hope and wish opportunity will smile on you to achieve this dream/aspiration.

Best wishes ma'am!

This is an awesome comment! It is clear that you have read my post and you know what I was trying to say.
Well done!

Absolutely, acknowledging the presence of corruption, especially from the highest levels of leadership, is a critical step towards addressing the issue. It’s commendable that President Ramaphosa is recognizing the need for integrity and ethical conduct within his own party and the country as a whole. Tackling corruption is indeed essential for fostering economic growth, providing essential services, and rebuilding trust within society. It’s a challenging battle, but one that must be fought diligently to create a fair and just society for all.

Yes, our president acknowledges corruption, but he has done nothing about it. That is so sad if you take into account that we have a corruption watch where you can even report corruption.
Nothing but nothing is done about corruption.

Fair and just.. that is all we ask.

Thank you! I appreciate your comment.

Has tocado aspectos claves y sensibles para sacar el país adelante, lo que se necesita es gente honesta y con sentido común. Parece mentira que la corrupción pueda hacer tanto daño, es un cáncer.

¡Saludos y éxitos!

what is needed is honest people with common sense

I had to smile when I read this.
It is so true! Honesty and common sense can not only make our countries but the world a better place.
Surely it cannot be so hard to find.

Thank you!☕

You are committed to leading South Africa towards a brighter future, overcoming challenges, and rewriting the history books. As the first female state president and the first white female president in nearly 30 years, your aim is to bring positive change and restore faith in your country's leadership.

If only, my friend.. if only!
How nice it will be to see the government of my country starting to fight for the people of this beautiful country and not for their own gloom.

Thank you! I appreciate the visit and the engagement.

Don't worry ma I believe everything will become batter one day

One day... as they say, prayers can move mountains. (•ิ‿•ิ)

Dear Pat
I have read you carefully and it seems that corruption is the flag that keeps us ruined. It is not just about acknowledging it, as President Ramaphosa did, it is about there being a healing in the economy.

As for the Constitution, this will be a dead letter to the extent that the articles are not fulfilled. It is useless to have a beautiful constitution if those who lead are blind to their mandate. That is the most important social contract of any nation!

We must guarantee that the lights are on for all sectors and ensure the improvement of the educational system.

If I can put an X for you, trust my decision because I also trust your governance.

Big greeting!

How wonderful that I will get an X from you!
How sad that both you and me know all too well that what I've addressed in my letter will never happen.
If only people could stop putting themselves first and concentrate on those around them. The world will be a totally different place.

Thank you; I enjoyed your comment! 🎕

PS: Maybe I should chain myself to a lamppost at our parliamentary building with this letter stuck to my chest.

There is a lot of indolence, dear friend.
Perhaps at any moment we will find a loophole so that our voices can be heard, and supported.

Hi @patjewell am so happy to read your entry, becoming a president is not easy, you need to take your people with you by providing basic needs. Wish you success

Oh yes, you have nailed it with your "it is not easy."
I agree 100% with you. Especially if you take over from a government that failed to deliver on the promises they've made.

You are absolutely right that corruption is a vicious circle from which no one can escape. Not only in South Africa, every country and every sector is full of corruption. And the result of this corruption is that the worthy ones are left behind and the unworthy people move ahead. Because they have money, know-how and if the President of a country accepts that there is corruption, then it seems very sad because if the President does not want corruption to spread, but the officers below him are engrossed in corruption. Still, it is very difficult to eradicate corruption. This is a disease which is continuously spreading and its cure is probably impossible. You have expressed your thoughts very beautifully. May you be successful in the competition, my friend.💕

The worst for me is that the president acknowledge the fact that there are corruption but still he does nothing about it!
Best of all, he himself is guilty!

Thank you for the visit my friend! It is appreciated!

Yes, you are saying absolutely right. He himself is guilty 😔.

Thank you for your reply ❤️

It saddens me when I read about other countries where things were also hunky-dory many moons ago.
Best of all, we can shout, we can cry, we can strike, and we can vandalize; they just won't listen to us..

Fingers crossed that somewhere there is someone who will have the guts to say enough is enough.

Thank you! I appreciate the engagement.

Rezo todos los días amiga para que eso suceda feliz noche

Greetings dear @patjewell hope you are doing well and enjoying happy moments of life with steem. The way of your presentation being a president is excellent. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about your country. Every country face the problem of economy and corruption and also face the bad education sectors. First of all we try to promote our education sectors and provide all things to need of teachers and students so that our youth are intelligent and lead the nation in good way. For a good education we higher a quality teacher and pay him a good salary to motivate their work. I wish you more success. Stay blessed

I am the one who must say thank you for not only reading my post but also for engaging with it.

It is wonderful that your country puts so much into teachers. I am afraid, that our government will fail. I always say that it takes a special person to be a teacher. We need to take special care of them.

Thank you, and blessings to you also.
