Definition of Body Language
"Body language is the unspoken form of communication that we use in each and every of our interaction with another person. It tell us exactly what the other person is thinking by analyzing the movement of his hands, gestures and tone of his speaking."
Well it’s such a beautiful study because you can actually come to know a lot about the other person just by observing them
Types of Body Language:
Body Language is not just how you look. It’s all about everything that we all say. Our body postures, hand movements, eye-contact, all these show exactly what you are saying. It can be or not in accordance to your actions and words.
Well not always your body language or actions match your words that you are saying. At time person who saying have discrepancies with the body language, the action may not match the word. Hence it is always good to observe the other person , what she or he is doing or not purely by observing the body language
Facial Expressions:
They say that the mirror is the soul and whatever you feel insight, your emotions come through the facial expression. You may feel anger, happiness, sadness, loneliness, depression all of this different facial expression can be seen on the face.
Well Facial expression talk about what is going in to your mind. It shows about your emotional attitude. They should be in sync with your words or actions
If somebody asks you how are you. And you are very sad voicing. Oh I am very fine thank you. But your facial expression is not matching with your words that you are saying. Well that’s shows to the other person that you are actually not fine. But you are pretending to be fine. And they can come to know by watching your facial expressions that you are indeed sad at that point
Eye-Contact:
It really says about the other person. If you remain eye-contact more than three seconds with that person. It is termed as staring to the other person
And it can get people very uncomfortable specially if they are at opposite gender. Hence it becomes important to maintain eye-contact of two to three seconds before that you blink or look away or look back to that person. Then it would not be termed as starring
In a professional set up it is important to maintain the eye-contact when you are talking to someone. Hence or else what happen to that person feels that you are rather a little nervous and not very confident about what you are saying
Eye-contact shows the confidence on the speaker’s part. When you make eye-contact with speaking . It helps you understand what the unsaid words
Gestures:
Gestures are the non-verbal form of communication which indicates particular messages in reference to the conversation. They include the movement of hands, face or other body part
Gestures are the way you use your hands. If you are using your hands openly and showing them. It shows your confidence to that person. If you don’t show your hands. Mean either you fisted or keep it back side of you. It shows that you are under confident and you are not a very open person. Hence body language or gesture is all about showing your hands. Do not point your hand or finger at someone. Always use open palm gesture rather than pointing at some one
Postures:
Proxemics
Proxemics is all about the distance. Which we need to maintain with the person you are speaking to. There are different kinds of spaces in proxemics. Proxemics is a kind of non-verbal form of body language that consists of spatial distances. It is the study of measurable distances between people when they interact with each other. One is intimate that is very close to the person you are speaking. It can make people uncomfortable. Well this space is only for your dear and near ones.
The second is in the personal zone which is the little further away
And the others are
- Functional zone
- Social zone
- Superficial zone
- Anonymous
Effective use of body language:
- Maintain eye-contact
- Use hands while talking
- Use the stage effectively
- Positive body postures
- Be careful with the handshake

Do’s | Don’ts |
