Did you know the tea bag was invented in 1908

The invention of the tea bag is a bit more interesting than a single date! There's some debate about who gets the credit:

  • Accidental Invention (1908): The popular story claims that Thomas Sullivan, a New York tea merchant, sent out samples of tea in small silken bags in 1908. Customers, mistakenly thinking they were supposed to steep the tea leaves in the bag itself, found it convenient and requested more "pre-packaged" tea.

  • Early Patents (Early 1900s): However, there's evidence of earlier inventions. Patent applications for tea infusers using mesh or fabric date back to the late 1800s in the US. In 1901, Roberta Lawson and Mary McLaren even patented a "Tea Leaf Holder" made of fabric.

So, while 1908 is often cited for the tea bag's invention, it was likely a gradual development with contributions from several sources.
