Did you know DVDs are physically the same size as a CDs but can store 13 times more data

in Did You Know28 days ago

DVDs can hold around 4.7 GB of data compared to a CD's 700 MB, which is closer to 6 or 7 times more storage.

The reason for the bigger capacity comes down to a few key differences:

  • Track Density: DVDs have much finer tracks crammed closer together than CDs. Imagine writing on a CD with a thick marker versus a DVD using a fine pen.

  • Laser Wavelength: DVDs use a shorter wavelength laser to read data, allowing for smaller data pits which hold more information.

  • Layers: Some DVDs have multiple data layers stacked on top of each other, doubling the storage capacity.

So, while not quite 13 times, the clever use of smaller tracks, shorter wavelength lasers, and sometimes even multiple layers gives DVDs a significant storage advantage over CDs.
