Did you know African elephants only have 4 teeth
African elephants actually have many more than 4 teeth throughout their lives. Here's the breakdown:
- Tusks: These are actually elongated incisor teeth, and African elephants (both male and female) have two.
- Molars: Elephants are constantly chewing tough vegetation, so their molars wear down over time. They have a special adaptation where new molars keep growing in the back of their jaw and slowly move forward to replace the worn-out ones. In their lifetime, an African elephant will go through six sets of molars!
So, while they don't have 4 teeth at any one time, they do have a complex dental system with many more teeth throughout their lives.
