A Memorable Farewell After 35 Years of Service
My maternal uncle retired at the end of March this year after serving in the Rural Development Department for nearly 35 years. He had joined the department around 1990 and dedicated most of his life to public service. Retirement marked a completely new phase in his life, and it was not an easy transition for him.
Spending thirty-five years in one department, working alongside colleagues, building relationships, and being part of countless projects creates a deep emotional bond. Knowing that all of it would come to an end on a particular day was understandably overwhelming. It was an emotional time not only for him but for all of us.
I have also worked with my uncle in the same department and even shared an office with him at one point. Later, we were posted at different offices, but I always understood the attachment that government officials develop with their department, their colleagues, and their work. However, retirement is a rule of life that everyone must eventually accept. It is one of those realities that reminds us that every chapter, no matter how meaningful, must someday come to a close.
His farewell function was organized at Yousmarg, which fell under his jurisdiction. Since Yousmarg is a beautiful and refreshing destination, his colleagues decided it would be the perfect place to honor his long and dedicated service. My uncle had asked me a couple of days earlier to accompany him, so I gladly agreed and prepared for the trip.
Only I know what emotions he was carrying during our journey. The thought of saying goodbye to a workplace and profession that had been a part of his daily life for thirty-five years weighed heavily on his mind. It was a unique and deeply emotional experience.
Fortunately, the farewell ceremony was conducted beautifully. The respect, appreciation, and affection shown by his colleagues made the occasion truly special. In this video, I have shared some moments from that memorable event. It will remain a cherished memory for my uncle as well as for me.
I hope you enjoy watching how we honor and celebrate our officials at the end of their service and how a farewell becomes a heartfelt tribute to years of dedication and commitment.
