Mysterious Island: Party at a danish prison
Anyone who wants to hike is drawn to the Alps, to Nepal, to the Way of St. James or at least to a famous long-distance hiking trail like the Kungsleden, which leads all the way up to the North Cape.
But the real adventures await elsewhere, where there are no hordes of hikers. Where the landscape is unknown and the hiking trail is often not even signposted. Have you ever heared about the Camønoen hiking path?

The Camøno Trail leads around the entire island of Møn, along beaches, cliffs, through forests and lonely swamps) We're trying to have a new adventure...

Denmark is not a traditional hiking country, but the Danish Baltic Sea island of Møn is famous for its chalk coast - and also a wonderful hiking destination for the curious. The Baltic Sea island now also has a hiking route that has received top marks.

The so called Camønoen way is a 175 kilometer long circular route around the island of Møn, but it also leads over the islands of Bogø and Nyord and it has the beautiful title of “friendliest hiking trail in the Danish kingdom”.

Along the beaches
Mostly it goes along the beach, through forests and fields, swarms of mosquitoes and past the villas of famous writers. The sun is burning, the wind is blowing. Anyone who wants to walk all this will work up a sweat, but will be rewarded with wonderful views.

With breathtaking nature, historical artifacts, friendly people and many surprises. Why picturesque Camønoen is a great tip even for inexperienced hikers.

First comes a bridge, then another. One is enormous, a marvel of technology. But there is only a small bridge leading over to Mon, long but flat. On the right there are birds in the water, on the left an angler is waiting for a catch.

Large, lonely houses characterize the landscape over on the island, which is located in the middle of the Baltic Sea, but off the usual tourist routes.

Empty Campsite
The campsite that we move into before the start of our hiking tour is also almost completely empty. No one can be seen, not in front or behind, not a mobile home, not a car, not even a person at reception. Anyone who sleeps here will find peace.

And who here also hikes? The Camønoen starts in Stege, the only large town on the island that is considered the unofficial capital. The town of the Danish Baltic Sea island of Møn is located in the middle of the north coast.
They remember the heritage of the Vikings.
Thanks to the unique location between the Stege Nor lagoon and Stege Bay, the sea on the beaches is calm and the views are fantastic. If you come through the medieval city gate, winding streets full of shops, small pubs and old houses open up.

The climate of Stege is mild, when the probability of precipitation decreases in spring, the best time to explore the place and the surrounding area begins. The best time to travel to Stege for a beach holiday is of course midsummer, but even then it never gets hot here, usually below 30°C.

The blue waves of the Baltic Sea, on the other hand, entice you to take a refreshing jump into the cool water.

There's still a bit of time until then, out of season Stege is quiet and quiet. You can drink a nice coffee on the market square, there's real Danish apple pie with it and a little later you'll find yourself just a street corner away at a private music party to which the whole place is invited.

A few musicians play classics by Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, the neighbors chat and finally we even find out why the windows around the yard are barred: This was the city's prison in earlier times. Look what you're sitting on, says one: Cell 7 is the writing, because this is an old wooden chair from the prison!

Walk to the harbor
The most beautiful place here is the harbor, where people are singing and dancing too. Right next to the Møns Museum with the Empiregaarden and the Thorsvang Collector's Museum there is a medieval Viking village, another band plays and ships sail through the yeast basin.

In addition to the berths at the old sugar factory, there is also a marina that offers an incredible view of the shipping traffic in Stege Bay.

The famous Møns flea market always takes place here from mid-June, and from July the Tuesday market runs until August. On the first Friday and Saturday in September every year, the herring market is celebrated with fresh delicacies from the sea. Apple Day is celebrated in Stege in October.

You can taste more than 30 different varieties of the sweet fruit and learn unusual recipes with apples! Return to the campsite via the Storetor with the old town hall of Stege, which is said to have been one of the largest squares in Denmark in the Middle Ages.

Take another breath. Tomorrow we start on a lap around the island, always along the coast, always forward, never back, from one shelter place to the next. That's the plan. Let's see what happens, when we left the small city on a way you can see on this picture...
